Smoking Jacket

The smoking jacket is now respectable attire for a formal or black tie occasion, despite its initial purpose of being worn primarily at home. A smoking jacket can be worn in a variety of ways, although those with ties at the waist are best used at home because they resemble robes. A man may put on a smoking jacket and go to a smoking room after supper. The jacket's main purpose was to trap the smoke from his pipe or cigar and shield his clothes from ashy spills. A proper smoking jacket will therefore be composed of heavy silk or cotton velvet to keep your clothing largely smoke-free.
