How does the CAS identity prevent confusion between similar Petroleum, Oil & Related Products listings?

The CAS identity is the unique numerical identifier for a specific chemical substance. It prevents confusion between isomers or similar hydrocarbons that share generic names but have different physical properties. Buyers must verify the CAS number matches their technical specifications, as a slight variation can render the product incompatible with existing storage tanks or processing equipment.

What safety data sheet format does the destination require for clearance?

The destination country mandates a safety data sheet that follows its specific regulatory structure, often differing from the seller's domestic template. Key sections include hazard communication, first-aid measures, and accidental release procedures tailored to local emergency response protocols. Importers must confirm the format matches the national chemical inventory requirements to avoid customs holds.

Why does the UN number matter for vessel booking?

The UN number classifies the hazardous material for transport, dictating which vessels are licensed to carry it. Shipping lines restrict certain UN numbers to specific vessel types or require segregated stowage away from heat sources. Incorrect UN numbers lead to rejected bookings or emergency offloading, causing significant delays and additional demurrage charges.

How does feedstock price movement affect a fixed quote?

Quotes for petroleum products are often linked to daily benchmark indices rather than fixed prices. If the feedstock price moves between the quote date and the contract signing, the final price adjusts accordingly. Buyers should clarify whether the quote is a fixed sum or a floating price formula to understand the exposure to market volatility.

What is the difference between drum and ISO tank freight?

Drummed shipments are handled as general cargo or break-bulk, incurring higher per-unit handling fees and lower volumetric efficiency. ISO tanks utilize specialized container terminals and allow for bulk liquid transport, reducing handling costs but requiring compatible infrastructure at both origin and destination. The choice impacts the total landed cost and available shipping routes.

How does REACH registration impact import eligibility?

REACH registration proves that a chemical substance has been evaluated for safety within the European Economic Area. Without valid registration, the substance cannot be legally imported or sold for industrial use. Buyers must request proof of registration or the seller's authorization to import, as non-compliant shipments are rejected at customs.

What happens if the packing group does not match the UN number?

A mismatch between the packing group and the UN number indicates incorrect hazard classification, which can lead to dangerous stowage errors. Customs authorities and shipping lines verify this alignment before accepting the dangerous-goods declaration. Discrepancies result in shipment rejection, fines, or mandatory repacking at the seller's expense, delaying the entire supply chain.
