How do I verify if a crude oil listing meets refinery specifications?

You need to request the full assay report which details the sulfur content, API gravity, and metal impurities. Refineries have strict tolerances for these parameters, and a general grade name like Crude Oil does not guarantee compatibility. Ask the seller to confirm the specific assay results match your refinery's intake requirements before proceeding with any commercial discussions.

What specific documentation is needed for refined petroleum products like diesel?

Destination entry turns on a safety data sheet formatted for the destination country, accompanied by the correct UN number and packing group. You must also provide a dangerous goods declaration that aligns with the specific hazard class of the refined product. Ensure the UN number matches the exact chemical composition to avoid rejection by port authorities.

Why do quotes for refined petroleum products expire so quickly?

Feedstock price volatility renders a quote stale within hours because crude and refined product costs move continuously with global market indices. Additionally, dangerous goods booking space is the real constraint, as available vessel slots for hazardous materials fluctuate daily. You should treat any quote as valid only for a very short window unless explicitly stated otherwise.

How does packaging choice impact the freight cost for bulk liquids?

Packaging choice drives freight expenses because drum, IBC, or ISO tank configurations dictate the volumetric weight and handling requirements. ISO tanks offer the most efficient space utilization for large volumes, while drums or IBCs increase the overall shipping cost due to lower density. The hazard class of the product also limits which vessels accept the booking, affecting the final freight rate.

What distinguishes a technical grade from a food grade listing?

The distinction lies in the impurity profile and the specific grade designation required for safe end-use. Food grade materials must meet stricter limits on contaminants and heavy metals compared to technical grade equivalents. Always check the CAS identity and the explicit grade designation in the listing to ensure compliance with your industry's regulatory standards.

Can I ship vegetable oils like soybean or palm oil using the same logistics as petroleum derivatives?

While both are liquids, vegetable oils like crude palm oil or refined soybean oil are generally not classified as dangerous goods unless they meet specific flash point criteria. However, you must still provide a safety data sheet and confirm the correct UN number if the product is heated or modified. The packaging requirements differ significantly, with ISO tanks being common for both but handled differently at ports.

What should I check before paying a deposit for a bulk liquid shipment?

You must establish ISO tank availability and confirm the specific assay results match your requirements. Verify that the seller can provide the safety data sheet in the correct format for your destination. Ensure the dangerous goods declaration is prepared accurately, as any error in the UN number or packing group can lead to significant delays and additional costs at the port of discharge.
