Question 1

How does the CAS identity for crude palm oil differ from petroleum coke in the same search result?

Accepted Answer

The CAS identity serves as the unique chemical fingerprint that separates these commodities despite appearing in the same broad category. Crude palm oil carries a specific identifier for triglycerides, while petroleum coke is defined by its carbon content and mineral impurities. Buyers must check this number in the specification to ensure the material matches their processing equipment. Using the wrong CAS identity leads to rejection at the refinery or processing plant.

Question 2

Why must the safety data sheet for bunker fuel match the destination country's regulatory format exactly?

Accepted Answer

Destination customs authorities require the safety data sheet to follow their specific language and hazard communication standards. A sheet formatted for the United States or Europe may be rejected if it lacks local regulatory references or translation. The UN number and packing group listed on the sheet must also correspond to the destination's dangerous goods regulations. Mismatches cause immediate holds at the port of entry.

Question 3

What makes a quote for gasoline railway impact wrench parts stale compared to the fuel itself?

Accepted Answer

While gasoline quotes expire due to crude oil price volatility, industrial parts quotes stale due to raw steel or alloy cost fluctuations. The dangerous-goods booking constraint does not apply to the wrenches, but feedstock price movements still shift the base manufacturing cost within days. Buyers should request a validity period for the industrial goods, as metal prices can change faster than the fuel indices used for petroleum derivatives.

Question 4

How does shipping high quality occ in an ISO tank versus a drum change the landed cost?

Accepted Answer

High quality occ typically requires chemical-resistant packaging, and the choice between ISO tank and drum alters the freight calculation significantly. An ISO tank allows for bulk shipment of liquid formulations, reducing the per-unit freight cost but requiring specialized discharge equipment at the destination. Drums incur higher handling fees and volumetric charges but offer flexibility for smaller volumes. The hazard class of the chemical determines which vessel types accept these packaging formats.

Question 5

Can a seller list petroleum coke as a generic carbon product, and how do I verify the grade?

Accepted Answer

Sellers often use generic terms like carbon product, but the actual grade is defined by the ash content and sulfur percentage. Buyers must request the assay results to confirm whether the material meets the specific impurity profile for their application. The grade designation, such as calcined or needle coke, dictates the price and suitability. Relying on the title alone risks purchasing material that fails quality checks at the receiving facility.

Question 6

What happens if the dangerous-goods declaration lists a different UN number than the safety data sheet for bunker fuel?

Accepted Answer

Discrepancies between the declaration and the safety data sheet trigger immediate inspections by port authorities and carrier compliance teams. The UN number determines the stowage location and segregation requirements on the vessel. A mismatch suggests the seller may have misclassified the hazard level, leading to rejected bookings or fines at discharge. Consistency between these documents is mandatory for safe and legal transport.

Question 7

Why does the impurity profile of crude palm oil matter more than the free fatty acid content for some buyers?

Accepted Answer

While free fatty acid content indicates oxidation level, the impurity profile reveals the presence of metals, phosphorus, or other contaminants. These impurities can poison catalysts in biodiesel production or clog filters in industrial burners. Buyers processing the oil for chemical derivatives must verify the full impurity profile against their equipment tolerances. The assay results provide the detailed breakdown needed to assess this risk accurately.
