How do engine hours and class notation affect the value of a used cargo ship listing?

Engine hours indicate the remaining operational life of the propulsion system, while class notation confirms compliance with international safety standards. A vessel with low hours and a current class certificate commands a higher price because it reduces immediate maintenance capital expenditure. Buyers should request the latest survey report to verify these figures match the physical condition of the asset.

What documentation must the seller provide to prove the title of a used boat is clear?

The seller must provide a bill of sale, the vessel registration certificate, and proof that all liens or mortgages have been discharged. Without clear title documentation, you cannot legally register the vessel in your country or obtain insurance. Verify that the name on the registration matches the seller exactly before transferring any funds.

Why does the listing date matter when inquiring about spare parts for industrial ships?

Marine spare parts are often obsolete or replaced by newer manufacturing batches. A listing posted months ago may refer to a part number that is no longer produced or available. Always ask the seller to confirm the current availability and part number revision to ensure compatibility with your existing fleet equipment.

How is the delivery point defined for a large cargo ship sold from the United States?

The sales contract typically specifies whether the vessel is sold on a dry-dock basis or free alongside a specific quay. This distinction determines who arranges and pays for the towage or barge transport to the final delivery location. Ambiguity in the delivery clause can lead to significant disputes over demurrage and port charges.

What inspection should a buyer arrange before finalizing the purchase of a used vessel?

A comprehensive marine survey conducted by an independent class-approved surveyor is essential to assess hull integrity, machinery condition, and safety equipment. The survey report highlights hidden defects that are not visible during a casual walkthrough. Budget for this inspection as it provides the leverage needed to negotiate a fair price or request repairs.

How do incoterms impact the final cost of importing marine equipment spare parts?

If the quote is FOB, you pay for ocean freight and insurance from the port of loading. If the quote is DDP, the seller covers all costs to your door, including customs duties. Understanding the incoterm prevents surprise charges for inland transport or handling fees at your local port of entry.
