Question 1

How do I distinguish a chemical listing from a petroleum listing when both appear under Industrial goods & chemical?

Accepted Answer

Check the material state and hazard classification in the listing details. Chemicals typically involve reactive substances, solvents, or compounds with specific purity grades, while petroleum listings refer to hydrocarbon streams like crude or refined fuels. The required documentation differs significantly, with chemicals needing safety data sheets and petroleum needing specific assay reports. Selecting the wrong branch leads to quotes that ignore the correct regulatory framework for your destination.

Question 2

What specific risk arises if I source Battery Scrap under Industrial Supplies instead of its proper branch?

Accepted Answer

Battery scrap involves hazardous materials that require specific handling, storage, and export permits not applicable to general industrial hardware. If you search under Industrial Supplies, you may find sellers who do not have the necessary environmental clearances or drainage protocols for lead acid units. This mismatch often results in quotes that exclude mandatory hazmat fees or fail to address the legal requirements for exporting regulated waste streams from the United States.

Question 3

What documentation is unique to Raw & Processed Leather exports from the United States?

Accepted Answer

Leather shipments often require specific sanitary certificates and tanning process declarations that differ from general industrial goods. The United States has particular regulations regarding the treatment chemicals used in the tanning process, which must be disclosed for import clearance in many markets. Listings in this branch should specify the type of leather and treatment method, as these factors dictate the required health and safety documentation for your destination country.

Question 4

How does the packing requirement for liquid chemicals differ from rigid Industrial Supplies?

Accepted Answer

Liquid chemicals require sealed, leak-proof containers that meet hazardous material transport standards, often involving UN-rated drums or ISO tanks. Rigid Industrial Supplies, such as machinery or tools, typically use standard wooden crates or palletized packaging without hazardous material restrictions. Confusing these packing standards leads to incorrect freight quotes, as hazmat packing incurs significantly higher material and handling costs at the US port of export.

Question 5

What specific data is missing from thin listings in Petroleum, Oil & Related Products?

Accepted Answer

Thin listings often omit the specific gravity, viscosity, and sulfur content, which are critical for determining the product's value and transport requirements. Without these technical parameters, a buyer cannot accurately calculate landed costs or determine if the product meets their refinery's intake specifications. Always request the full assay report or product specification sheet before engaging with a seller in this branch, as the default listing rarely contains enough detail for a meaningful comparison.

Question 6

How does sourcing Marine Equipment differ from general Industrial Supplies in terms of export controls?

Accepted Answer

Marine Equipment often falls under dual-use or defense-related export controls, requiring specific licenses from US authorities before shipment is permitted. General Industrial Supplies rarely face such stringent scrutiny unless they contain specific military-grade components. Buyers must verify if the item requires an export license from the relevant US agency, as this process can delay shipment by weeks or months if not addressed in the initial enquiry phase.

Question 7

What happens if the drain level is not specified for Battery Scrap from the United States?

Accepted Answer

The drain level determines the amount of residual acid remaining in the battery, which directly impacts the scrap's weight, value, and hazmat classification. An unspecified drain level creates ambiguity in pricing, as sellers may quote based on wet weight while buyers expect dry weight. Always clarify the expected drain percentage or residual acid content in your enquiry to ensure the quote reflects the actual usable material and associated handling costs.
