Question 1

How does the sulfur content in Diesel Oil affect its acceptance at destination ports?

Accepted Answer

Sulfur content determines the fuel's classification under international maritime regulations and local environmental laws. High-sulfur variants may be rejected at ports with strict emission control areas or require expensive desulfurization treatment before use. Buyers must verify the maximum allowable sulfur percentage in their destination country's fuel specifications to avoid customs rejection or fines. The assay report provides the exact percentage, which is the critical data point for regulatory compliance.

Question 2

What specific document proves the UN number is correct for a dangerous goods shipment?

Accepted Answer

The safety data sheet must explicitly state the UN number and packing group assigned by the competent authority. This document serves as the primary reference for carriers and port authorities to classify the hazard class correctly. An incorrect UN number leads to immediate rejection by shipping lines, as they cannot book space without accurate hazard classification. Always cross-reference the UN number in the SDS with the destination country's dangerous goods transport regulations.

Question 3

Why do quotes for Diesel Gas D Oil Gost expire so quickly?

Accepted Answer

Quotes for Diesel Gas D Oil Gost expire rapidly because they are tied to real-time crude oil benchmarks and refining margins. Feedstock price volatility means the base cost changes constantly, making fixed prices unsustainable beyond a short window. Additionally, dangerous-goods booking space is limited, and once a vessel slot is secured, the seller must lock in the price. Delays in buyer response often result in the loss of the available shipping capacity.

Question 4

How does ISO tank usage change the landed cost compared to drums?

Accepted Answer

ISO tanks reduce per-unit freight costs by maximizing volume per container, whereas drums incur higher handling and packaging expenses. Hazard class restrictions may limit which vessels accept ISO tanks, potentially forcing longer routing or higher insurance premiums. Drummed shipments are easier to handle at smaller ports but cost more to ship per barrel. The choice between ISO tanks and drums directly impacts the final landed cost through freight and insurance differentials.

Question 5

What is the difference between technical grade and food grade Petroleum, Oil & Related Products?

Accepted Answer

Technical grade allows for higher impurity levels and is suitable for industrial machinery or heating, while food grade requires strict purity standards for human consumption applications. The CAS identity and impurity profile define these distinctions, with food grade needing additional certifications for safety. Buyers must specify the grade designation to ensure the product meets the intended use case. Using technical grade in food applications violates health regulations and risks severe penalties.

Question 6

How does the impurity profile impact downstream processing in a refinery?

Accepted Answer

Impurities like sulfur, nitrogen, and metals can poison catalysts in refining units, reducing efficiency and increasing maintenance costs. The assay report details these impurities, allowing buyers to calculate the cost of additional treatment or blending. High-impurity feeds require more complex processing, which increases operational expenses. Buyers should request the full impurity profile to assess the true cost of processing the product in their specific refinery configuration.

Question 7

What happens if the safety data sheet does not match the destination country's format?

Accepted Answer

Customs authorities may reject the shipment if the safety data sheet does not conform to local regulatory requirements. The document must be translated and formatted to include specific hazard communications and emergency contact details required by the destination. Non-compliant SDS can lead to storage fees, re-exportation, or destruction of the cargo. Always verify the SDS format with the destination's regulatory body before shipping.
