Question 1

How does the mesh size of monazite sand affect the handling equipment at the destination port?

Accepted Answer

Mesh size determines the particle or lump size distribution, which influences the conveyor belt speed and screening capacity at the receiving facility. Fine monazite sand requires specialized dust suppression systems to meet environmental regulations. Buyers must specify the exact mesh range to ensure the seller's loading method matches the destination's unloading infrastructure. Mismatched particle sizes can cause blockages or excessive dust, leading to demurrage charges.

Question 2

What specific radiation threshold must beryllium ore meet for EU entry?

Accepted Answer

Beryllium ore often contains naturally occurring radioactive materials that trigger radiation screening at the border. The destination authority sets a specific threshold for gamma radiation levels, which must be documented in the mill test certificate. Sellers must provide pre-shipment radiation readings to prove compliance. If the ore exceeds the limit, the consignment is rejected or requires costly decontamination before release.

Question 3

How does moisture content in spodumene lithium alter the invoice weight?

Accepted Answer

Moisture content directly reduces the net weight of the spodumene lithium delivered. Suppliers often quote on a dry basis, but the invoice may reflect the wet weight at loading. Buyers need to clarify whether the price is based on the as-shipped weight or a dried weight calculation. Discrepancies in moisture measurement can lead to significant financial losses if the weight basis is not standardized in the contract.

Question 4

Why does scrap contamination in lead zinc ore cause customs delays?

Accepted Answer

Scrap-contamination screening identifies non-mineral debris mixed into the lead zinc ore. Customs authorities reject shipments containing excessive foreign materials because they interfere with smelting processes. The mill test certificate must detail the impurity levels. If the scrap content exceeds the specified limit, the buyer faces rejection or must pay for sorting and cleaning before the ore can be processed.

Question 5

What documentation proves fluorite ore purity for glass manufacturing?

Accepted Answer

Glass manufacturers require a chemical assay that confirms the calcium fluoride percentage and silica content. The mill test certificate serves as the primary proof of this purity. Buyers should request a recent assay report that matches the specific lot being shipped. Variations in silica or other impurities can alter the melting temperature and quality of the final glass product.

Question 6

How does the stowage factor of copper ore impact container loading?

Accepted Answer

The stowage factor determines how much volume a tonne of copper ore occupies. High-density copper ore often reaches the weight limit of a container before the volume is full. This allows buyers to maximize the payload per container, reducing the shipping cost per tonne. Understanding this factor helps in planning the exact number of containers needed for a specific order volume.

Question 7

When is break-bulk preferred over container shipping for nickel ore?

Accepted Answer

Break-bulk is preferred when the nickel ore quantity exceeds the capacity of standard containers or when the density allows for more efficient weight-based shipping. Large bulk carriers can handle massive tonnages more economically than multiple container loads. Buyers should calculate the total volume and weight to determine if break-bulk offers a lower landed cost compared to containerized shipping options.
