Question 1

How does the KOR value affect my Raw Cashew Nuts purchase?

Accepted Answer

The Kernel Outturn Ratio determines how many kilograms of usable kernel you get from one hundred kilograms of raw nuts. A higher KOR means better processing efficiency and lower cost per kilogram of finished product. Sellers in Nigeria specify this ratio because it varies by harvest region and drying method. If the KOR is low, your mill will produce less sellable output from the same input weight. Always compare the KOR alongside the price to calculate the true landed cost of the kernel.

Question 2

What packing difference matters for Cleaned sesame seeds?

Accepted Answer

Sesame seeds must be packed in breathable, moisture-resistant bags to prevent heating and mold development during sea transit. Unlike bulk minerals, sesame requires strict weight control and clean bagging to avoid contamination. Sellers often use poly-lined jute bags to maintain hygiene standards. If the packing is compromised, the seeds can absorb moisture and fail quality checks at the destination port. Verify that the bags are sealed and stored in dry conditions before loading.

Question 3

Why do Ilmenite Ore listings require assay reports?

Accepted Answer

The value of Ilmenite Ore depends entirely on its titanium dioxide content, which varies by deposit. Buyers need an independent assay report to confirm the chemical composition before agreeing to a price. Without this data, you cannot determine if the ore meets your smelting requirements. Listings in the Minerals & metals sub-branch typically include this information, while those in Industrial goods might not. Always request a recent assay certificate to verify the grade matches the seller's claim.

Question 4

What distinguishes Bonny Light Crude Oil from general petroleum listings?

Accepted Answer

Bonny Light Crude Oil has specific gravity and sulfur content parameters that make it suitable for certain refineries. General petroleum listings may refer to heavier or sourer grades that require different processing equipment. Buyers must check the API gravity and sulfur percentage to ensure compatibility with their refinery's intake criteria. Sellers in Nigeria often specify Bonny Light to indicate a premium, light sweet crude. Confirm these technical specifications before negotiating, as they directly impact the refining cost and final product yield.

Question 5

What mistake does a first-time buyer make when sourcing from Nigeria?

Accepted Answer

First-time buyers often assume that all listings under a broad category like Agriculture have the same quality standards. In reality, specifications like KOR for cashews or moisture content for sesame vary widely between sellers. Some sellers file under the wrong sub-branch, omitting critical data like assay reports for minerals. Always verify the specific sub-branch and requested documentation before sending an enquiry. This prevents receiving quotes for products that do not meet your technical requirements.

Question 6

How do I decide between Agriculture and Minerals & metals branches?

Accepted Answer

Choose Agriculture for plant-based products like cashews and sesame that require phytosanitary certificates and moisture control. Select Minerals & metals for bulk solids like ilmenite or titanium sand that need assay reports and density data. The sub-branch determines the inspection standards and packaging requirements. If a listing is unclear, check the product description for keywords like 'kernel' or 'titanium dioxide'. Filing under the wrong branch often leads to missing critical specifications in the initial quote.

Question 7

What documentation is essential for sesame seed exports from Nigeria?

Accepted Answer

Cleaned sesame seeds require a phytosanitary certificate to prove freedom from live insects and regulated pests. Buyers also need a certificate of origin to claim any preferential tariffs. Quality certificates detailing moisture content and foreign matter percentage are essential for customs clearance. Sellers should provide these documents before shipment to avoid delays at the destination port. Without proper documentation, the seeds may be rejected or destroyed upon arrival.
