Question 1

How does the CAS identity in a listing affect my ability to register the chemical in my destination market?

Accepted Answer

The CAS identity is the unique numerical identifier for a chemical substance. Your destination market's regulatory framework, such as REACH in Europe or TSCA in the US, requires this specific identifier to link the product to its safety data and registration status. Without the correct CAS number, you cannot prove the substance is already registered, leading to delays or rejection at the border. Check the listing's specification table for this identifier before enquiring.

Question 2

What happens if the safety data sheet lists a different UN number than the packing group used in the booking?

Accepted Answer

A mismatch between the UN number and the packing group creates a dangerous inconsistency in the dangerous goods declaration. The vessel operator will reject the booking because the stowage plan and safety measures are based on specific hazard classifications. Even if the chemical is identical, the packaging group dictates the level of containment required. Ensure the seller provides a safety data sheet that aligns with the packing configuration they propose.

Question 3

Does the assay percentage for furnace oil determine its calorific value and combustion efficiency?

Accepted Answer

Yes, the assay percentage indicates the concentration of the active hydrocarbon components, which directly correlates to the calorific value. A higher assay percentage typically means more energy per unit of mass, improving combustion efficiency in industrial boilers. Buyers must compare this figure across listings, as generic terms like fuel oil do not specify energy content. The assay is the primary metric for evaluating performance.

Question 4

Why is dangerous goods booking space a tighter constraint than product availability for petroleum products?

Accepted Answer

Vessels have limited space for hazardous cargo due to strict segregation rules and safety protocols. Even if the seller has stock, the lack of available slots on a vessel that accepts the specific hazard class can delay shipment for weeks. This constraint often overrides price sensitivity, as buyers must secure space to meet production schedules. Check the seller's ability to provide booking confirmation alongside the quote.

Question 5

How does choosing an ISO tank versus a drum change the freight cost for lubricants?

Accepted Answer

ISO tanks allow for bulk liquid transport, reducing the per-unit packaging cost and handling fees compared to individual drums. However, ISO tanks require specialized equipment for loading and unloading at both ends, which may not be available at all ports. Drums offer greater flexibility for smaller volumes but incur higher freight costs due to increased volume and weight. Select the packaging based on your destination's unloading infrastructure.

Question 6

What role does the impurity profile play in selecting jet fuel for aviation use?

Accepted Answer

The impurity profile, including sulfur content and particulate matter, affects engine performance and longevity. Aviation regulations set strict limits on these impurities to prevent engine fouling and corrosion. A listing that omits the impurity profile is incomplete for aviation buyers. Request the detailed chemical analysis to ensure the fuel meets the specific grade requirements for your aircraft fleet.

Question 7

How does the grade designation separate a pharma-grade solvent from a technical grade one?

Accepted Answer

The grade designation defines the level of purification and the allowable impurities. Pharma-grade solvents undergo additional processing to remove trace contaminants that could affect drug safety. Technical grades are suitable for industrial cleaning or manufacturing but do not meet pharmaceutical purity standards. Buyers must specify the intended use, as the seller may list the same chemical under different grade designations with vastly different prices.
