Question 1

How do you distinguish between Ores and Minerals and Metal & Metal Products when the listing title is vague?

Accepted Answer

The distinction lies in the physical state and inspection method. Ores and Minerals are bulk commodities traded by weight and assay, where moisture content and grade define value. Metal & Metal Products are fabricated items traded by unit or specific weight, where dimensions, temper, and alloy composition matter. If the listing mentions niobium without specifying a chemical grade or alloy, it likely belongs in the raw material branch. If it describes a finished assembly like a ram memory scrap gold finger, it requires fabricated product specifications.

Question 2

What specific documentation is critical for niobium exports from Brazil?

Accepted Answer

Niobium exports require precise assay certificates and chemical analysis reports. The documentation must verify the concentration of niobium pentoxide and other elemental impurities. Buyers must request these reports before evaluating the price, as the value is driven entirely by purity. Unlike fabricated metals, the physical form is secondary to the chemical composition stated in the certificate.

Question 3

Why is a quote for bulk ores hard to compare without knowing the moisture limit?

Accepted Answer

Moisture content directly affects the payable weight and the shipping volume. Sellers may quote on a wet basis or a dry basis, leading to significant price discrepancies. A listing that omits the moisture limit makes it impossible to calculate the landed cost accurately. Buyers must specify the desired basis in their enquiry to receive comparable quotes from different suppliers.

Question 4

What packing risk exists for fabricated metal products shipped from Brazil?

Accepted Answer

Fabricated items like metal products are susceptible to damage from humidity and handling during inland transport. Unlike bulk ores, these goods require protective packaging to prevent corrosion or deformation. Buyers should clarify whether the seller provides seaworthy packaging and whether the incoterm covers loading at the factory or at the port. Poor packing can lead to rejection at the destination due to visible damage.

Question 5

How does the physical form of niobium affect its handling compared to scrap metal?

Accepted Answer

Niobium is typically exported in sealed containers or bags to prevent oxidation and contamination. Scrap metal, such as ram memory scrap gold finger, is often loose and requires different loading procedures. The handling equipment and storage requirements differ significantly between the two. Buyers must ensure their logistics provider can handle the specific form of the commodity.

Question 6

What error occurs when sourcing raw minerals under the fabricated metals branch?

Accepted Answer

The error is assuming standard manufactured tolerances apply to raw bulk material. Ores and Minerals are subject to natural variation in grade and composition. A buyer looking for a specific temper or alloy finish will find no relevant data in a raw mineral listing. The trade lane for raw materials focuses on assay and logistics, not on finished product specifications.

Question 7

What changes between the initial assay report and the shipped lot of niobium?

Accepted Answer

The initial report may not reflect the actual moisture content or impurity levels of the specific batch being shipped. The final assay is conducted on the loaded cargo to determine the exact payable weight and grade. Buyers must verify that the shipping documents match the final assay report to avoid paying for moisture or impurities.
