How does count per kilogram determine the size of Tiger Prawns in a Sri Lanka listing?

The count per kilogram indicates how many individual prawns make up one kilogram of product. A lower number means larger prawns, while a higher number means smaller ones. Buyers must check if this count applies to the net weight of the meat alone or includes the glaze ice. Misinterpreting this figure leads to paying for ice weight as if it were meat.

What catch documentation proves the origin of wild-caught prawns from Sri Lanka?

Catch documentation provides the traceability chain from the vessel to the processing plant. It records the fishing zone, the date of capture, and the vessel identification number. Destination authorities use this to verify that the seafood was not caught in restricted areas or without proper permits. Missing or inconsistent documentation can lead to immediate shipment rejection.

Why does the glaze percentage change the payable net weight for frozen seafood?

Glaze is the ice coating applied to frozen seafood to prevent freezer burn. The glaze percentage represents the weight of the ice relative to the total gross weight. Buyers pay for the total package weight, so a high glaze percentage reduces the amount of actual seafood received. Always calculate the net weight after deducting the glaze to compare true value.

What temperature setting is standard for live mud crab during transit from Sri Lanka?

Live mud crabs require specific low-temperature conditions to remain dormant and alive during transit. The exact temperature setting depends on the species and the duration of the journey. Sellers must provide proof that the reefer container maintained this precise temperature throughout the voyage. Deviations can result in high mortality rates upon arrival.

How does the competent-authority establishment number affect Seafood Supplies clearance?

The competent-authority establishment number identifies the specific processing facility approved by the exporting country's government. Destination authorities cross-reference this number against their list of approved foreign establishments. If the number is missing, invalid, or does not match the product type, the shipment will be held or destroyed.

What happens if reefer plug availability is not confirmed before booking Sri Lanka seafood?

Reefer plugs are limited resources at major ports and on vessels. If plug availability is not confirmed, the container may be delayed at the terminal or placed on a vessel without power capability. This leads to temperature fluctuations that spoil the product. Always secure plug confirmation before finalizing the booking to avoid costly delays.

Why does the freezing method impact the texture of fresh prawns after thawing?

The freezing method determines how ice crystals form within the muscle tissue. Quick freezing methods like blast freezing create smaller crystals that cause less cell damage. Slow freezing forms larger crystals that rupture cell walls, leading to mushy texture after thawing. Buyers should specify the required freezing method to ensure the desired quality upon arrival.
