Question 1

How do I distinguish a chemical listing from a petroleum one in the tree?

Accepted Answer

Check the sub-category selection first. Petroleum listings typically refer to fuel grades, lubricants, or raw hydrocarbon streams. Chemical listings refer to manufactured compounds, resins, or additives. If a listing mentions viscosity or octane rating, it belongs in Petroleum. If it mentions molecular weight, purity percentage, or hazard symbols, it belongs in Chemicals & Allied Products. Misplacing these items leads to incorrect insurance quotes and handling errors.

Question 2

What packing difference separates Rubber & Related Items from Chemicals?

Accepted Answer

Rubber & Related Items often involve rolls, sheets, or compounded pieces that require protection from UV exposure and ozone. Chemicals like Ldpe Repro Pellets typically come in sealed bags or bulk containers to prevent moisture absorption and contamination. The inspection focus for rubber checks physical dimensions and tensile strength, while chemical inspection verifies purity and chemical composition. Confusing these leads to rejected shipments at destination ports.

Question 3

Why does a Bunker Fuel listing need different inspection than general supplies?

Accepted Answer

Bunker Fuel requires strict adherence to ISO standards for viscosity, sulfur content, and density. Inspection involves sampling the fuel at the berth to verify it meets the agreed specification. General industrial supplies do not require this level of fluid analysis. A buyer must confirm the testing agency and the specific ISO grade before accepting a quote, as non-compliance results in engine damage and contract penalties.

Question 4

What documentation does Singapore require for chemical exports?

Accepted Answer

Exports require a precise hazardous materials declaration if the product falls under dangerous goods regulations. The seller must provide the Safety Data Sheet and the correct UN number. Singapore Customs and the Maritime and Port Authority require these documents for clearance. Without the correct classification, the shipment will be held at the terminal, incurring demurrage charges and delaying delivery.

Question 5

How do thin listings for Industrial Supplies differ from Chemicals?

Accepted Answer

Industrial Supplies listings often lack detailed technical specifications because many items are standardized hardware. Chemical listings must include purity levels, molecular formulas, or hazard classifications to be actionable. A thin listing for a chemical is useless because the buyer cannot determine compatibility or safety requirements. Always verify that the technical data sheet is attached or available before proceeding.

Question 6

What fails after shipment for Packaging Products filed under this category?

Accepted Answer

Packaging Products often face rejection due to incorrect material declarations or missing fumigation certificates if they contain wood. Buyers must verify the material composition, such as whether the plastic is recyclable or food-grade. Inspections focus on dimensional accuracy and structural integrity. If the listing omits these details, the buyer risks customs holds and additional testing fees at the destination.

Question 7

How does sourcing Marine Equipment differ from general Industrial Supplies?

Accepted Answer

Marine Equipment & Machinery requires compliance with international maritime standards, such as classification society approvals. General Industrial Supplies do not have these regulatory hurdles. Buyers must verify if the equipment has the necessary certifications for marine use, such as fire resistance or corrosion protection. Failure to check these specifications can lead to equipment rejection by shipping lines or port authorities.
