Question 1

How does a buyer distinguish between Household Merchandise and Home Furniture & Interior Decoration when both list tables?

Accepted Answer

Household Merchandise typically covers non-structural or decorative table items like trays, stands, or small accessories that do not bear significant weight. Home Furniture & Interior Decoration includes structural tables designed for daily use, which require specific joinery details and load-bearing specifications. Check the material description and intended use; if it is a heavy wooden surface, it belongs in the furniture branch. If it is a lightweight accessory, it fits the merchandise category. Confusing the two leads to incorrect shipping volume estimates.

Question 2

What specification must be checked first when sourcing from Portugal for wood-based items?

Accepted Answer

You must verify the wood species and its moisture content before requesting a quote. Portugal exports significant amounts of cork and eucalyptus-based products, which have different stability requirements than tropical hardwoods. A listing that omits the wood grade or treatment status is incomplete for structural furniture. Ask for the specific timber type and whether it has been kiln-dried to prevent warping during transit to humid destinations.

Question 3

Why do quotes for PU foam scrap differ so much from rigid furniture prices?

Accepted Answer

PU foam scrap is priced by weight and volume due to its low density and bulkiness, while rigid furniture is priced by unit and packing complexity. The logistics for foam scrap involve compression or baling to fit containers, whereas furniture requires palletizing and crating. A buyer must ask how the seller handles packaging for scrap, as uncompressed foam will fill a container too quickly. For furniture, ask about disassembly requirements to reduce shipping volume.

Question 4

What goes wrong if I ignore the sub-category split for Carpets, Rugs & Floorings?

Accepted Answer

Carpets and rugs require specific pile height, backing material, and flame retardancy specifications that are irrelevant to general household goods. If you search in the wrong branch, you will miss listings that explicitly state these textile parameters. The inspection process for woven textiles involves checking for dye consistency and edge finishing, which differs from furniture assembly checks. Always filter by the flooring sub-category to ensure the supplier specializes in textile coverings.

Question 5

How does the export route from Portugal affect the landed cost of granite?

Accepted Answer

Black granite from Portugal is heavy and requires robust packaging to prevent chipping during the road or rail journey to the port of Sines. The cost includes not just the stone but also the wooden crate and forklift handling at the origin. Buyers must clarify if the quote includes delivery to the port or if they must arrange inland transport. Demurrage charges at the port can accumulate quickly if the container is not ready for immediate loading.

Question 6

What is the main risk when comparing a cork product listing with a furniture listing?

Accepted Answer

Cork products and furniture share the wood category but have vastly different quality metrics. Cork is evaluated by thickness, grain uniformity, and binding agent, while furniture is judged by joinery strength and finish durability. A buyer comparing these side-by-side will find no common ground for negotiation. Treat cork as a raw material or component, not as a finished furniture piece, to avoid confusion in specification requirements.

Question 7

Two look-alike rows for Home Furniture & Interior Decoration, what is actually different?

Accepted Answer

One row likely lists a fully assembled piece, while the other specifies flat-pack or knock-down construction. This distinction changes the packing volume and the required assembly skills at the destination. Check the description for terms like 'ready to use' or 'needs assembly'. The price difference often reflects the labor cost of assembly at the factory, which reduces shipping volume for flat-pack items. Always confirm the packing format to avoid unexpected handling fees.
