Question 1

How does treatment disclosure affect the value of a tourmaline listing?

Accepted Answer

Treatment disclosure is a mandatory field that separates natural stones from those that have been heated, fractured filled or otherwise enhanced. Buyers must verify this detail because treated stones trade at a significantly lower price than untreated equivalents. A listing that omits this information requires immediate clarification before any financial commitment is made. The visual appearance may be identical, but the structural integrity and long-term value differ substantially between treated and untreated stones.

Question 2

What hallmarking details confirm the purity of gold bars in Nigeria?

Accepted Answer

The hallmark stamp on the gold bar indicates the exact metal purity, such as eighteen karat or twenty four karat standards. Buyers must cross reference this stamp with the seller's declaration to ensure the piece meets the destination country's hallmarking rules. Without a valid hallmark, the gold may not clear customs or may be rejected by local assayers. The hallmark provides the only physical proof of purity that accompanies the shipment.

Question 3

Why is the Kimberley Process certificate essential for rough diamonds?

Accepted Answer

The Kimberley Process certificate tracks the origin of rough diamonds to ensure they are not funding conflict. This document is a strict requirement for export from Nigeria and import into many major markets. Without this specific certificate, the shipment will be seized or returned by customs authorities. The certificate links the physical stones to their source mine, providing the legal chain of custody required for international trade.

Question 4

How does insurance value impact the freight cost for gems?

Accepted Answer

Insurance costs are calculated based on the declared value of the shipment rather than its physical weight. Since gems and jewellery have high value density, the insurance premium becomes the largest component of the landed cost. Secure carriage methods are also chosen based on value to minimize theft risk. Buyers should expect the freight quote to reflect the insured value closely.

Question 5

What happens if the metal and stone prices shift after a quote?

Accepted Answer

A quote for gems and jewellery is valid only for a limited period because global market prices move daily. If the buyer delays acceptance, the seller may withdraw the offer or adjust the price to reflect current market rates. This time sensitivity means that negotiations must move quickly to lock in the agreed terms. Buyers should treat every quote as time sensitive and act within the stated validity window.

Question 6

How do setting and finish differences appear in listings?

Accepted Answer

The setting and finish describe how the metal is crafted around the stone and the overall surface texture. These details affect both the aesthetic appeal and the durability of the piece. Buyers should examine close up images or request detailed specifications to understand the craftsmanship level. Two items with similar stones can have vastly different values based on the quality of the setting.

Question 7

What high-value import declaration is needed for the destination?

Accepted Answer

The destination country often requires a high-value import declaration to assess duties and verify the authenticity of the goods. This declaration must match the commercial invoice and the Kimberley Process certificate if applicable. Inaccurate declarations can lead to delays, fines or seizure of the shipment. Buyers must ensure that all documentation aligns precisely with the physical goods being shipped.
