How does the kernel count per pound change the effective price?

The kernel count per pound is the primary grading standard for Macadamia Nuts in Nigeria. A lower count means larger kernels, which commands a premium price due to lower processing waste and higher retail value. If a listing states 180 count instead of 240 count, the price per kilogram will be significantly higher. Always compare the count specification, not just the headline price, to understand the true value.

What phytosanitary certificate does the EU require for these nuts?

The European Union requires a specific phytosanitary certificate confirming the Macadamia Nuts are free from quarantine pests. The certificate must be issued by the Nigerian Agricultural Quarantine Service and match the destination port details exactly. Some EU member states may require additional treatment records for raw nuts. You must verify the exact wording required by your local border agency before the shipment departs Lagos or Onne.

Can I trust a Macadamia Nuts listing posted two weeks ago?

A listing posted two weeks ago is likely stale because Macadamia Nuts are often sold in limited harvest batches. The seller may have already secured a buyer for that specific lot, or the price may have changed due to market fluctuations. Treat the posting date as a signal to request a fresh quote immediately. Do not assume the price or availability remains unchanged without explicit confirmation from the seller.

Who pays for trucking from the farm to the Nigerian port?

If the quote is based on FOB terms, the seller pays for the inland haulage from the farm or collection center to the port. However, you must verify if the seller includes local port handling fees in that price. If the quote is EXW, you arrange and pay for all trucking from the source. Always clarify the exact handover point to avoid unexpected logistics costs upon arrival.

Does moisture content affect the storage life of Macadamia Nuts?

Yes, high moisture content leads to rancidity and mold growth in Macadamia Nuts during transit. The row should state the moisture percentage, which must be below the safe threshold for long-term shipping. If the moisture level is too high, the nuts will spoil before reaching your destination. Request a recent lab test result if the row does not specify the exact moisture percentage.

What happens if the kernel size on the shipment differs from the row?

If the shipped lot does not match the kernel size specified on the row, it is considered a grade mismatch. You can reject the shipment or negotiate a price reduction based on the actual count. Always include the specific kernel size requirement in your purchase contract. Independent inspection at the loading port is the only way to ensure the shipped lot matches the agreed specification.

Why do Macadamia Nuts from Nigeria have different defect limits?

Different destination markets have varying tolerance levels for shell fragments and foreign matter in Macadamia Nuts. The row should state the accepted defect limit, which varies by buyer specification. If you require a higher purity standard, you must specify this in your enquiry. The seller may charge more for tighter grading or offer a lower grade if your market allows higher defect limits.
