Question 1

What specific document does Malawi issue to prove the legal origin of sapphires?

Accepted Answer

Malawi issues a certificate of origin for gemstones to confirm they were mined and exported within the country. This document is critical for buyers who need to prove the provenance of their stones to customs or downstream customers. Without this specific paperwork, the stones may be held at the destination port or face additional scrutiny regarding their extraction legality.

Question 2

How does the landlocked status of Malawi affect the incoterm choice for rice?

Accepted Answer

Because goods must travel by road to a coastal port before loading onto a vessel, sellers often quote on FCA or CPT terms rather than FOB. This reflects the reality that the seller controls the inland leg to the port of discharge. Buyers should clarify who arranges and pays for this overland transport to avoid hidden costs in the final landed price.

Question 3

What quality parameter is most critical when inspecting soya beans from Malawi?

Accepted Answer

Moisture content is the primary concern for soya beans shipped from Malawi, as high humidity can lead to mold or spoilage during transit. Buyers should request a recent lab report showing the percentage before committing to a purchase. Ensuring the beans are dried to the correct level protects the oil quality and prevents weight loss due to evaporation.

Question 4

Why do mango shipments from Malawi require strict temperature management?

Accepted Answer

Mangoes are climate-sensitive fruit that continue to ripen after harvest, so temperature control is essential to maintain quality during the long overland journey. Reefer containers are often used to keep the fruit at a specific temperature to slow down the ripening process. Failure to maintain this chain can result in the fruit arriving overripe or bruised, leading to rejection by the buyer.

Question 5

What inspection is needed for rice exports to ensure food safety?

Accepted Answer

Rice exported from Malawi typically requires a phytosanitary certificate to prove it is free from pests and diseases. Buyers may also request a quality inspection report detailing the head rice percentage and degree of milling. These documents verify that the rice meets the specific culinary and safety standards of the importing country.

Question 6

How does the thin inventory of sapphires in Malawi impact order timing?

Accepted Answer

Gemstone inventory in Malawi is often thin, meaning specific cuts or colors may not be readily available for immediate shipment. Buyers should expect longer lead times as sellers source individual stones to meet specific grade requirements. Planning ahead and communicating precise size and clarity needs can help mitigate delays in receiving the desired lot.

Question 7

What is the main logistical risk when exporting soya beans from Malawi?

Accepted Answer

The main risk is damage or contamination during the overland transport to the coastal port, as the goods travel on roads that may vary in condition. Buyers should ensure the seller uses proper packaging, such as sealed bags, to protect the beans from moisture and physical damage. Verifying the transport method before payment can help avoid losses due to transit issues.
