Question 1

How does the construction method of iron handicrafts affect the unit of sale?

Accepted Answer

The construction method determines whether an iron item is sold as a single welded piece or as a kit requiring assembly. Hand-forged items with visible weld marks are typically sold individually as artisanal goods, while stamped or cast items may be bundled in sets. This distinction affects the grade, as hand-finished surfaces command higher value than machine-produced uniformity. Buyers must clarify if the price includes assembly hardware or if the item arrives pre-assembled, as this changes the handling and packing requirements significantly.

Question 2

What safety declarations are needed for dyed terracotta items entering strict markets?

Accepted Answer

Dyed terracotta items require material safety declarations for the glazes and pigments used to ensure they do not leach heavy metals. Markets with strict consumer safety laws demand proof that the surface finish is non-toxic and stable under normal use. Sellers must provide test reports for the specific colorants applied to the clay body. Without these declarations, customs authorities may hold the shipment for further inspection, delaying entry and increasing storage costs at the destination port.

Question 3

How does the cube of marble handicraft packaging impact freight charges?

Accepted Answer

Marble handicrafts are dense but often packed in large wooden crates to prevent chipping, making volumetric weight the primary cost driver. The cube of the packaging determines the space the lot occupies in a container, often exceeding the actual weight limit. Buyers should request compact packing configurations to reduce the freight cost relative to the product value. Understanding the external dimensions of the crate is essential for accurate landed cost calculations before ordering.

Question 4

What distinguishes a paper handicraft listing from other decorative items on this page?

Accepted Answer

Paper handicrafts are distinguished by their reliance on layering, cutting, and folding techniques rather than solid material construction. The grade depends on paper density, the precision of die-cut edges, and the adhesion method used to hold shapes together. Unlike rigid materials, paper items are sensitive to humidity and require specific packaging to prevent warping. Listings must specify whether the item is flat-packed or pre-formed, as this affects both the unit of sale and the packaging volume.

Question 5

When do quotes for Gifts & Decorative become invalid due to retail seasons?

Accepted Answer

Quotes for Gifts & Decorative from Ireland become invalid when approaching major retail seasons like Christmas or Easter, as production capacity is prioritized for high-volume orders. Material costs for raw inputs like clay, metal, and paper also fluctuate with seasonal demand spikes. Buyers requesting quotes outside these peak windows may receive more stable pricing. It is crucial to confirm the validity period of the quote, as prices can shift rapidly as production slots fill up for holiday deliveries.

Question 6

What packing rules apply to mixed-material decorative items for export?

Accepted Answer

Mixed-material decorative items require clear labelling of each component material to meet destination entry requirements for waste disposal and recycling. Packaging must protect fragile parts like glass or ceramic while allowing for easy identification of materials like metal or plastic. Sellers must declare the composition of the item to avoid customs delays caused by unclear material safety data. Proper segregation of materials in the packaging also helps reduce volumetric weight by eliminating unnecessary void space.

Question 7

How does the finish on marble affect the grade compared to unpolished stone?

Accepted Answer

The finish on marble handicrafts determines the grade by indicating the level of surface treatment and aesthetic appeal. Polished finishes require additional processing steps and higher skill, resulting in a higher grade than unpolished or tumbled stone. The uniformity of the polish and the absence of surface defects are key grading criteria. Buyers should specify the required finish level, as this directly impacts the price and the visual quality of the final decorative item.
