How does carat weight affect the comparison of two diamond listings?

Carat weight is the primary driver of value for loose stones and set pieces alike. Two listings may both claim a one-carat stone, but the actual weight can vary by points, which significantly changes the price. Buyers must check the precise weight stated in the listing details, as even a fraction of a point difference alters the market value. Always request the grading report that confirms the exact weight alongside the clarity and cut specifications.

What hallmarking rules apply to gold jewellery leaving Greece?

Gold jewellery exported from Greece must comply with the hallmarking rules of the destination country, not just Greek standards. The purity of the metal, often indicated by karat marks, must be verified against the receiving market's legal thresholds. Sellers typically provide a stamp on the piece, but buyers must ensure this matches their local import regulations for precious metals. Misaligned hallmarking can lead to seizure or re-export at the buyer's expense.

When is a Kimberley Process certificate needed for Gem exports?

A Kimberley Process certificate is mandatory only for rough diamonds being shipped across international borders. It proves the stones are conflict-free and required by most major markets to prevent the trade of blood diamonds. Finished gemstone jewellery does not require this document, but loose rough diamonds do. Buyers must specify if their order includes rough stones to ensure the seller can provide the correct paperwork.

Why do quotes for Bracelet Bands expire within hours?

Quotes for Bracelet Bands expire quickly because the metal prices they are based on fluctuate daily. A seller cannot hold a price for long when the cost of silver or gold changes every trading session. The quote is valid only for a short window, usually a few hours, until the seller can reconfirm the current market rate. Delaying an enquiry beyond this window requires a new calculation.

How does secure carriage impact the cost of shipping jewellery?

Secure carriage is essential for high-value Gems & Jewellery and often costs more than standard postal services. The physical weight of the shipment is irrelevant to freight costs, so insurance and specialized handling dominate the final price. Buyers should expect to pay a premium for bonded transport and high-value insurance to protect against loss or theft. Standard courier rates are rarely suitable for high-value lots.

What treatment disclosure details must buyers verify in a listing?

Treatment disclosure reveals whether a gemstone has been heated, treated, or enhanced to improve its appearance. This information is critical because treated stones have a different market value than untreated ones. Buyers must check the listing for specific mentions of treatments like fracture filling or dyeing. Without this disclosure, the buyer cannot accurately assess the long-term durability or resale value of the stone.

How does setting and finish affect the inspection of finished pieces?

Setting and finish quality determine whether a piece is ready for retail or requires additional work. Buyers should inspect the stability of the prongs and the smoothness of the metal finish. Poor setting can lead to stone loss during transit or wear, while rough finishes may indicate lower craftsmanship. These details are often visible in high-resolution images but require close scrutiny to identify potential defects.
