Question 1

How do I distinguish between scrap metal listings and raw ore listings when both appear under Minerals & metals?

Accepted Answer

Scrap metal listings typically describe processed materials like aluminum wheels or copper wire, which often require dimensional specs and purity grades. Raw ore listings focus on chemical composition and moisture content. Check the sub-category first, as Metal & Metal Products contains the processed items while Ores and Minerals holds the raw bulk. Misidentifying the branch leads to quotes that ignore the correct inspection standards.

Question 2

What specific documentation does Egypt issue for export shipments that differs from other origins?

Accepted Answer

Export shipments from Egypt require specific customs documentation that aligns with local port procedures. Buyers should verify if the seller provides the necessary export clearance papers and commercial invoices that meet destination country requirements. The paperwork chain often includes certificates of origin that must be notarized. Ensure the seller clarifies their role in obtaining these documents before quoting.

Question 3

Why is an assay certificate critical for copper wire scrap listings but not for fabricated aluminum products?

Accepted Answer

Copper wire scrap is valued for its metal content, so an assay certificate proves the actual purity and grade of the material. Fabricated aluminum products like wheels or cans are valued by weight and dimensions rather than chemical assay. The listing for copper wire scrap must include assay results to be actionable, whereas aluminum scrap may only need weight and condition details.

Question 4

What packing difference separates bulk ores from fabricated metal products in this category?

Accepted Answer

Bulk ores are typically shipped in loose bulk vessels or large containers without specific palletizing. Fabricated metal products often require crating, strapping, or containerized handling to prevent damage. The packing method affects insurance and handling costs. Buyers must confirm the packing method in the listing to ensure it matches their receiving facility's capabilities.

Question 5

How does the grading vocabulary differ between Ores and Minerals and Metal & Metal Products?

Accepted Answer

Ores and Minerals use chemical grades and purity percentages to define quality. Metal & Metal Products use physical grades, temper, or weave types. The terminology reflects the end use, with ores needing chemical analysis and metals needing mechanical properties. Using the wrong term in an enquiry will confuse sellers who specialize in one branch over the other.

Question 6

What mistake occurs when sourcing aluminum can scrap without checking the sub-branch?

Accepted Answer

Buyers often miss that aluminum can scrap requires specific sorting and baling standards that differ from other aluminum scrap. The listing must specify if it is clean or mixed, and if it meets certain density requirements. Starting in the wrong branch may lead to quotes for general aluminum scrap that do not meet the specific needs of recycling facilities.

Question 7

Why do quotes for used electric motor scrap resist comparison with general metal products?

Accepted Answer

Used electric motor scrap contains valuable copper and steel components that require separate valuation. General metal products do not have this composite nature. The quote must account for the separation of materials or the value of the intact motors. Buyers should ensure the seller specifies whether the price is for whole motors or separated components.
