Question 1

How does moisture content in Ferro Silicon Bar affect the payable weight?

Accepted Answer

Moisture acts as dead weight that you pay for but cannot process. The contract usually specifies a maximum moisture percentage, and any excess is deducted from the gross tonnage to calculate the net payable weight. If the material is wet, the actual amount of ferro silicon bar you receive is lower than the shipping documents suggest, which raises the effective price per unit of metal. Always check the moisture limit in the listing to avoid overpaying for water.

Question 2

What specific radiation data do buyers need for trace mineral concentrates?

Accepted Answer

Buyers require gamma spectroscopy results that identify specific isotopes and their activity levels in becquerels per kilogram. This data proves the concentrate does not contain naturally occurring radioactive materials above the destination country's safety thresholds. Without this specific assay, customs will hold the shipment for independent testing, causing delays and demurrage charges. Ensure the seller provides recent laboratory results for Great Salt Lake Trace Mineral Concentrate or similar sources.

Question 3

Why is a mineral export licence critical before booking freight?

Accepted Answer

The licence is the legal permission from the Canadian government to remove the mineral resource from the country. Without this document, the port authority will not allow the cargo to be loaded onto the vessel. Even if you have a contract and a shipping slot, the shipment cannot depart without this regulatory clearance. Always verify the seller has applied for or holds this licence before finalizing payment terms.

Question 4

How does sulfur granularity impact container loading efficiency?

Accepted Answer

Granular sulfur flows differently than lump material, allowing it to be packed tightly in containers without significant void space. However, fine particles can generate dust that may violate environmental regulations during transit if not properly contained. The particle size distribution determines whether you need lined bags or bulk containers to prevent leakage and ensure the container is filled to its maximum weight limit safely.

Question 5

What is the difference between mill test certificate and chemical assay?

Accepted Answer

The mill test certificate is the official document from the processing facility that lists the chemical composition and physical properties of the specific batch. The chemical assay is the laboratory analysis performed to generate the data for that certificate. Buyers rely on the mill test certificate as the primary proof of grade, but they may request an independent assay to verify the seller's reported values before shipping.

Question 6

Why do quotes for iron ore expire within days rather than weeks?

Accepted Answer

Iron ore prices are tied to global indices that fluctuate daily based on steel demand and supply disruptions. A quote held open for weeks exposes the seller to significant price risk if the index moves. Consequently, sellers restrict the validity period to a few days to protect their margins. You must confirm the order and arrange logistics quickly to secure the quoted rate.

Question 7

How does density determine if you pay for weight or volume?

Accepted Answer

Ores and minerals are heavy, so they often hit the weight limit of a container before it is physically full. If the material is dense, you pay for the weight capacity, and the unused volume is irrelevant. If the material is less dense, you fill the container by volume but do not reach the weight limit, so you pay for the volume space used. This stowage factor calculation is critical for accurate landed cost estimation.
