Question 1

How does GSM or thread count change the durability of a briefcase shell?

Accepted Answer

GSM or thread count measures the density of the fabric used in the bag construction. A higher GSM indicates a heavier, more abrasion-resistant material suitable for heavy loads. A lower GSM suggests a lighter, more flexible product that may tear under stress. Buyers must verify this metric in the tech pack to ensure the bag meets their durability requirements. This specification directly correlates with the retail price and the expected lifespan of the product.

Question 2

What happens if the fibre-content label is incorrect on a suitcase?

Accepted Answer

An incorrect fibre-content label prevents the shipment from clearing customs in many jurisdictions. Regulatory bodies require accurate composition data to enforce chemical restrictions and duty classifications. If the label states cotton but the bag contains polyester, the goods are considered mislabeled. This leads to fines, storage fees, and potential rejection at the destination. Always request a pre-production sample with the final label attached for verification.

Question 3

Why does the fabric booking window affect the price of suitcases?

Accepted Answer

The price of Suitcases, Briefcases & Bags is tied to raw fabric availability and production slots. Manufacturers book fabric months in advance to secure rates and ensure supply. If you wait until the booking window closes, the fabric may be allocated to other buyers. This forces a switch to a more expensive material or a delayed production schedule. The quote becomes stale immediately after the window closes, requiring a new negotiation.

Question 4

How does hanging versus flat pack impact the container cube for bags?

Accepted Answer

Hanging bags retain their shape and require more space per unit, reducing the total quantity per container. Flat packed bags can be compressed, maximizing the carton cube and lowering freight costs per unit. The choice between hanging and flat pack depends on the retail display requirements and the budget for shipping. Buyers must calculate the landed cost based on the packing method chosen by the supplier.

Question 5

What role does colourfastness play in the quality of a bag?

Accepted Answer

Colourfastness determines whether the dye remains stable under light, washing, and friction. A bag with poor colourfastness will bleed or fade quickly, leading to customer returns and brand damage. This specification is tested in the lab before bulk production begins. Buyers should request colourfastness test results to ensure the product meets the destination market's quality standards. Ignoring this test often results in significant losses after shipping.

Question 6

Why do sample and approval rounds delay the bulk order for bags?

Accepted Answer

Sample and approval rounds ensure the final product matches the tech pack and buyer expectations. Each round of revisions adds time to the production schedule and may incur additional sampling fees. Delays in approval push the bulk production start date, potentially missing the seasonal buying calendar. Buyers must factor in this lead time when planning their inventory. Rushing this stage often results in a product that does not meet the required specifications.

Question 7

How does the destination textile quota affect the landed cost of bags?

Accepted Answer

The destination textile quota or duty class determines the tariff rate applied to the imported goods. If the quota is full, the duty rate may increase significantly, raising the landed cost. Buyers must verify the current quota status and duty class for their specific market. This factor can change the profitability of a deal overnight. Always include the latest duty rates in your cost calculation to avoid unexpected expenses.
