How does the ash or silica content in niobium affect its suitability for steelmaking alloys?

High ash or silica content in niobium reduces the purity of the final steel alloy. Steelmakers require low impurity levels to maintain specific mechanical properties and welding characteristics. A mill test certificate must explicitly state the ash and silica percentages to confirm the material meets the strict chemical assay requirements for high-performance steel production.

Why must the mineral export licence match the exact alloy designation in the mill test certificate?

Customs authorities in the destination country verify that the exported goods match the declared classification. If the mineral export licence lists a general category but the mill test certificate shows a specific alloy designation, the shipment may be held for reclassification. This mismatch causes delays and potential fines because the regulatory body cannot verify the commodity's true nature.

What happens to the quote if the global index shifts between the offer and the buyer's acceptance?

The quoted price becomes invalid immediately because metal prices track volatile global indices. Sellers do not hold offers open for weeks due to this rapid fluctuation. The buyer must accept the quote within the short validity window or request a new price based on the current index level at the time of acceptance.

How does the density of aluminium shredded scrap influence the choice between break-bulk and container shipping?

Aluminium shredded scrap has a low density, meaning it fills container volume long before reaching the weight limit. This high stowage factor makes container shipping less efficient due to unused weight capacity. Break-bulk shipping is often more cost-effective because it allows for higher volume loads without the strict weight constraints of standard containers.

What specific screening is required for ferrous metal scrap to prevent rejection at destination ports?

Destinations mandate rigorous radiation and scrap-contamination screening to ensure no hazardous materials are mixed with the ferrous scrap. This screening verifies that the lot contains only the declared metal type without hidden contaminants. Failure to pass this screening results in immediate rejection or costly decontamination procedures at the destination port.

How does the particle size distribution in ship and marine scrap affect processing costs?

Uneven particle size distribution in ship and marine scrap increases the time and energy required for shredding and separation. Smaller particles may require additional screening steps to separate valuable metals from debris. Buyers must check the specified particle size distribution in the listing to estimate the downstream processing expenses accurately.

Why is the moisture content critical when calculating the landed cost of titanium scrap?

Moisture content adds weight that the buyer pays for but provides no metallurgical value. High moisture levels also risk corrosion during transit, potentially damaging the titanium scrap. Buyers must verify the moisture percentage in the mill test certificate to adjust the effective price per unit of pure metal and avoid paying for unnecessary water weight.
