Question 1

How do I distinguish between raw cashew nuts and processed kernels in the listing details?

Accepted Answer

Raw cashew nuts are unshelled and contain high moisture, requiring drying before processing, whereas kernels are the edible seed removed from the shell. Listings for raw nuts will specify the count per pound and moisture percentage, while kernel listings detail the color grade, such as white or yellow, and whether they are full halves or broken pieces. This distinction is critical because the storage requirements and intended use for each form are completely different.

Question 2

What packing differences exist between cow horns and cashew shell residue?

Accepted Answer

Cow horns are typically packed in bales or loose bundles, secured to prevent movement during sea freight, and require inspection for cracks or rot at the base. Cashew shell residue, often sold as shell oil or dust, is packed in heavy-duty sacks to prevent leakage and contamination. The packing method directly affects how you calculate volumetric weight and whether you need special handling equipment at the discharge port.

Question 3

Why do nitrile gloves from Benin require different documentation than agricultural products?

Accepted Answer

Agricultural products like cashew nuts primarily need phytosanitary certificates to prove they are free from pests and diseases. Nitrile gloves, being industrial or medical goods, may require certificates of analysis or compliance with specific chemical standards for the region you are importing to. Sellers must clarify which documents apply, as agricultural protocols do not cover chemical safety or sterility requirements for gloves.

Question 4

What happens if a cashew kernel listing omits the color grade?

Accepted Answer

Without a color grade, you cannot determine if the product meets your processing or retail standards, as white kernels command a higher price than yellow or scorched ones. You must ask the seller to provide a photo or specify the grade before sending an enquiry. Assuming the grade based on the price alone is risky, as sellers may list premium grades at competitive prices to attract initial interest.

Question 5

How does the thin inventory in Benin affect my choice of sub-category?

Accepted Answer

Benin has strong exports in cashew products and cow horns, but thinner listings for nitrile gloves or other industrial goods. If you search for gloves, you may find fewer suppliers or less detailed specifications compared to agricultural products. You should verify the seller's actual capacity and stock levels before committing to a large order, as the variety in industrial categories may be limited.

Question 6

What specific defect should I look for in cow horns before ordering?

Accepted Answer

Inspect the base of the horn for signs of rot or cracking, which can compromise the structural integrity of the final product. Also check for discoloration or insect damage along the curve, as these issues are not always visible in low-resolution listing photos. Requesting close-up images of the base and tip is essential to avoid receiving material that is unsuitable for carving or display.

Question 7

Why is moisture content the most critical spec for raw cashew nuts?

Accepted Answer

High moisture content leads to mold growth and aflatoxin contamination during storage and transit, rendering the nuts unusable for processing. Sellers must state the exact moisture percentage, and buyers should verify this with third-party inspection before shipment. Ignoring this spec can result in the entire container being rejected at the destination, leading to significant financial loss.
