Question 1

How does the glaze percentage on frozen chicken paws affect the final landed cost per kilogram of edible meat?

Accepted Answer

The glaze percentage represents the ice coating weight added during freezing to prevent freezer burn. This weight is paid for but does not contribute to the edible product. When calculating the true cost, you must subtract the glaze weight from the gross weight. A higher glaze percentage means you are paying more for water than for the chicken paws themselves. Always compare the net weight price, not the gross weight price, to ensure accurate cost comparison between suppliers.

Question 2

What specific establishment details must match the health certificate for frozen pork shoulder shipments from Belgium?

Accepted Answer

The competent-authority establishment number on the packaging must exactly match the number on the health certificate. This number identifies the specific processing facility where the pork shoulder was cut and packed. Import authorities verify this number against their approved list of eligible facilities. Any discrepancy, even a single digit error, will result in the shipment being held or rejected at the border. Ensure the seller provides the certificate before payment.

Question 3

Why do quotes for frozen chicken feet expire faster than other livestock items in the Belgium market?

Accepted Answer

Frozen chicken feet prices are highly sensitive to seasonal demand and quota openings. When a new quota period begins, supply volumes can shift dramatically, causing immediate price adjustments. Additionally, the availability of reefer space for these specific items fluctuates based on global poultry trends. A quote that is valid for one week may become obsolete if a major shipment arrives or a quota closes. Always ask for the quote validity period and confirm current stock status.

Question 4

How does the count per kilogram differ between frozen chicken hearts and frozen chicken paws in trade listings?

Accepted Answer

The count per kilogram indicates the number of pieces in one kilogram of product. Chicken hearts are smaller and denser, resulting in a higher count per kilogram compared to chicken paws. This metric defines the size grade of the product. Buyers use this number to determine portion control and cooking yield. A listing that only states small, medium, or large without the count per kilogram is insufficient for precise ordering. Always request the specific count per kilogram to compare listings accurately.

Question 5

What role does the catch or production date play in the grading of frozen beef cuts from Belgium?

Accepted Answer

The production date determines the freshness and shelf life of the frozen beef. While freezing preserves the meat, the date affects the quality grading and acceptance in strict markets. Older production dates may be subject to lower grades or specific handling requirements. Buyers in certain destinations reject shipments produced beyond a certain timeframe. The health certificate must state this date clearly. Verify that the production date aligns with your destination's acceptance criteria before placing an order.

Question 6

How do cold-chain temperature records impact the acceptance of frozen meat shipments at the destination port?

Accepted Answer

Cold-chain temperature records prove that the product remained at the required temperature throughout transit. Destination authorities often require these records to verify that the cold chain was not broken. A deviation in temperature can lead to product rejection, even if the goods appear intact. The records must cover the entire journey from the Belgian facility to the destination. Ensure the seller can provide continuous temperature logs that match the shipment dates.

Question 7

What is the difference in reefer plug requirements between frozen pork shoulder and frozen lamb cuts?

Accepted Answer

Reefer plug requirements depend on the container type and the destination terminal infrastructure. While the product itself does not change the plug type, the temperature setting does. Frozen pork and lamb may require different temperature settings for optimal preservation. The reefer unit must be set to the correct degree and monitored continuously. Verify that the destination terminal has the necessary plug capacity and power supply for the specific container requirements. Mismatched plug types can cause delays and additional handling fees.
