How does treatment disclosure change the value of a rough stone?

Treatment disclosure indicates whether a gem has been heated, fractured-filled, or dyed to improve appearance. Untreated stones command a premium because their color and clarity are natural. Buyers must ask for a laboratory report that explicitly states no enhancements were used. Without this disclosure, a stone may look attractive but lack investment value or durability.

What is the Kimberley Process and when is it required?

The Kimberley Process is an international certification scheme for rough diamonds. It prevents conflict diamonds from entering the legitimate trade. If you are importing rough diamonds, you must require a Kimberley Process certificate from the supplier. This document proves the stones are conflict-free and meets the legal requirements of most destination countries for customs clearance.

Why do quotes for loose stones expire so fast?

Precious metals and rough gemstones are traded on global markets with real-time pricing. A quote provided this morning may be invalid by afternoon due to market fluctuations. Suppliers hold prices only for a brief period, often just hours. Always confirm the validity window before sending payment or finalizing the order to avoid price shocks.

How is shipping cost calculated for high-value jewellery?

Freight costs are based on the security level required, not the physical weight of the parcel. Secure carriage involves bonded couriers and specialized handling protocols. Insurance premiums are calculated as a percentage of the declared value. This means a small box of diamonds costs more to ship than a large box of beads because of the risk and security measures involved.

What distinguishes natural Indonesia Blue Amber from other amber?

Natural Indonesia Blue Amber is known for its distinct fluorescence under UV light and its specific geographic origin. It differs from Baltic amber in color tone and inclusion types. When comparing listings, check for photos that show the blue hue in natural daylight. Avoid listings that mix amber with other fossil resins, as this affects authenticity and price.

What hallmarking rules apply to imported gold jewellery?

Destination countries have specific hallmarking rules that dictate the purity stamps required on gold items. These rules define the minimum karat weight and the format of the assay mark. A listing that does not specify the hallmark standard may not clear customs in your country. Verify that the seller's product matches your local legal standards for metal purity before ordering.

What information is often missing from a rough gem listing?

Sellers frequently omit the exact carat weight of individual stones in a rough lot. They may also leave out the cut potential, which is crucial for evaluating yield. Always ask for a video showing the stone under different lighting conditions. This reveals inclusions or fractures that static photos might hide, ensuring you understand the true quality of the material.
