Question 1

How do assay reports differ between gold bars and raw nuggets filed under Minerals & metals?

Accepted Answer

Bars typically come with standardized weight and purity stamps that simplify initial verification, whereas raw nuggets require laboratory assaying to determine exact gold content and impurity levels. Buyers must request the specific assay method used, as field assays differ significantly from laboratory results. The listing should specify whether the price is based on estimated purity or assayed purity, as this distinction affects the final settlement amount.

Question 2

What moisture limit is critical for coffee beans exported from Zaire?

Accepted Answer

Coffee beans must be dried to a specific moisture percentage to prevent mold growth and fermentation during transit. If the moisture level exceeds the standard limit, the beans may spoil before reaching the destination port. Buyers should check the listing for the stated moisture content and request recent test results to ensure the batch meets the required threshold for safe storage and transport.

Question 3

Why does a peanut listing in Agriculture require a different inspection than one in Food & Beverages?

Accepted Answer

Agriculture listings often refer to raw, unshelled peanuts that require phytosanitary certificates to prove freedom from pests and diseases. Food & Beverages listings usually imply processed, shelled, or roasted products that need hygiene and safety inspections instead. Misfiled listings can lead to customs delays because the wrong certificate type is presented, causing the shipment to be held for re-inspection.

Question 4

What happens if a gold listing omits the purity grade?

Accepted Answer

Without a stated purity grade, the seller cannot provide an accurate quote because the value of the metal depends entirely on its gold content. Buyers must ask for the specific karat or fineness before proceeding, as trading unassayed gold carries significant risk. The quote will likely be based on a conservative estimate, which may result in a higher price than the actual metal value.

Question 5

How does the landlocked status of Zaire affect coffee shipment timelines?

Accepted Answer

Coffee beans must travel overland to a distant port before being loaded onto vessels, adding weeks to the transit time compared to coastal exporters. Delays at border crossings are common and can extend the delivery window unpredictably. Buyers should factor in this extra time when planning their inventory, as seasonal coffee harvests require tight logistics to maintain quality.

Question 6

What is the costliest assumption a buyer makes about raw peanuts from this origin?

Accepted Answer

Buyers often assume raw peanuts are ready for immediate consumption or processing, but they require cleaning, sorting, and sometimes roasting before use. Assuming the product is finished goods leads to unexpected processing costs and potential quality issues if the raw material is contaminated. The listing must specify the processing stage to avoid these hidden expenses.

Question 7

How do you verify the difference between a sample and the shipped lot of gold?

Accepted Answer

Samples may be pure or representative, but the bulk shipment can vary in impurity levels if not properly assayed. Buyers should insist on an independent assay of the bulk lot before final payment, rather than relying on the sample's quality. The listing should clarify if the price includes the cost of bulk assaying, as this is a standard requirement for mineral trades.
