Question 1

How do I decide if wet salted hides belong in Food & Beverages or Agriculture?

Accepted Answer

Wet salted hides are biological materials intended for leather production, placing them firmly in the Agriculture category. They are not food products, so placing them in Food & Beverages creates a mismatch in inspection requirements. Buyers looking for leather inputs should start in Agriculture to find the correct veterinary certification standards, whereas Food & Beverages is reserved for edible commodities like honey and refined sugar.

Question 2

What happens if I search for Sidr honey in the Agriculture branch instead of Food & Beverages?

Accepted Answer

You will likely encounter listings that lack the specific food safety documentation required for human consumption. The Agriculture branch focuses on raw material grading and agricultural standards, which do not always align with the residue limits and hygiene protocols demanded by food importers. You may find the honey, but you will need to manually verify that the seller can provide the necessary food-grade certifications, which are standard in the Food & Beverages branch.

Question 3

What specific documentation does the destination market require for Yemeni Sidr honey?

Accepted Answer

Destination authorities typically require a certificate of origin, a phytosanitary certificate, and a detailed analysis report confirming sugar content and enzyme levels. For Sidr honey specifically, buyers often request proof of monofloral origin to justify the premium price. Without these documents, the honey may be rejected at the border or subjected to costly re-testing, which adds significant time and expense to the clearance process.

Question 4

Why do quotes for Refined Sugar from Yemen vary so widely?

Accepted Answer

The variation usually stems from the degree of refinement and the packaging specifications. Some listings offer raw sugar with lower purity, while others provide fully refined white sugar with higher crystallization standards. Additionally, the packaging type, such as jute bags versus plastic-lined cartons, affects the final price. Buyers must clarify the exact Brix level and packaging material to ensure they are comparing equivalent products.

Question 5

How does the grading of Yemeni Sidr honey affect the quote?

Accepted Answer

Honey grades are determined by moisture content, diastase activity, and hydroxymethylfurfural levels. Grade A honey has the lowest moisture and highest enzyme activity, commanding a premium price. Lower grades may have higher moisture, which can lead to fermentation during transit if not properly stored. Buyers should check the specific grade parameters in the listing, as a small difference in moisture can significantly impact the product's shelf life and value.

Question 6

What unique challenge do buyers face with Shark fins from Yemen?

Accepted Answer

Shark fins are subject to strict international trade regulations under CITES, requiring specific export permits from Yemen and import permits from the destination country. Sellers must demonstrate legal sourcing to avoid seizure. Buyers must verify that the seller has the necessary CITES documentation before placing an order, as missing permits can result in the entire shipment being confiscated and destroyed.

Question 7

What is the primary risk when importing wet salted hides from Yemen?

Accepted Answer

The primary risk is inconsistent salting and drying, which can lead to bacterial growth or hide degradation during transit. Hides must be uniformly salted and dried to prevent rot. Buyers should request detailed photos of the packing process and ensure the seller follows proper curing protocols. Inadequate preservation can result in significant weight loss and quality deterioration upon arrival, reducing the usable yield for tanneries.
