Question 1

How does the export permit process differ for ores versus processed metals leaving Viet Nam?

Accepted Answer

Ores typically require environmental clearance and specific export licenses due to their raw state and potential ecological impact. Processed metals often need different compliance checks, such as phytosanitary certificates if wood packaging is used or anti-dumping duties depending on the alloy. Sellers must hold the correct permit for the specific sub-category to clear customs. Buyers should ask for proof of this permit before agreeing to any terms to ensure the goods can actually leave the country.

Question 2

What moisture limit matters for bulk ore shipments from Viet Nam ports?

Accepted Answer

Moisture content determines whether the ore can be safely loaded onto a bulk carrier. Exceeding the transportable moisture limit causes liquefaction, which can capsize a vessel. Sellers must provide a recent moisture analysis. Buyers should specify the maximum allowable percentage in the enquiry. This parameter is critical for safety and is not negotiable by port authorities.

Question 3

Why is a mill certificate insufficient for raw ore listings?

Accepted Answer

A mill certificate confirms the properties of a manufactured metal product, such as tensile strength or chemical composition of a finished bar. It does not apply to raw ores, which require assay results to verify elemental content and impurity levels. Using a mill certificate for an ore listing is a mismatch of documentation. Buyers must request assay reports for ores and mill certificates only for processed metal products.

Question 4

What packing difference separates scrap metal from fabricated steel components?

Accepted Answer

Scrap metal is usually loaded as dry bulk or in open-top containers without specific unitization. Fabricated components like pipes or beams require crating, strapping, or palletizing to prevent damage during transit. The packing method affects the freight cost and the handling equipment needed at the destination. Sellers must state the packing type clearly, as bulk scrap and unitized steel have different loading procedures.

Question 5

How does the destination port affect the choice between Ores and Minerals?

Accepted Answer

Some ports lack the infrastructure to handle bulk ore dischargers or specialized cranes for heavy steel. Buyers must confirm that the destination terminal can accept the specific form of the goods. A port suitable for containerized metal products may not handle loose bulk ores. This logistical constraint often dictates which sub-category is viable for a given import route.

Question 6

What inspection standard applies to Joss Powder and Tabu Powder in this category?

Accepted Answer

Joss Powder and Tabu Powder are organic materials often classified under minerals or organic chemicals depending on local definitions. They require different inspection criteria than metals, focusing on particle size and purity rather than metallurgical grades. Buyers must verify if these listings are correctly filed under Ores and Minerals or if they belong to a chemical sub-category. Misclassification leads to incorrect customs duties and inspection delays.

Question 7

What is the costliest error when sourcing from the broad Minerals & metals category?

Accepted Answer

The most common error is assuming all listings share the same logistics and documentation requirements. Sourcing a bulk ore from a branch intended for fabricated metals results in failed customs clearance and demurrage charges. Buyers must identify the correct sub-branch before comparing prices. The divergence in packing, inspection, and export permits makes direct comparison across the main category impossible.
