How do assay results for chrome content differ between technical and food grade leather?

Assay results define the exact chemical residue left in the hide after tanning. Technical grade leather allows higher chrome levels suitable for industrial applications like footwear soles or heavy upholstery. Food grade leather requires significantly lower residual chrome and stricter impurity profiles to ensure safety if it contacts food packaging or processing equipment. Buyers must verify the specific assay percentage in the listing to avoid using the wrong grade for their manufacturing process.

What specific information on the safety data sheet prevents customs delays for processed leather?

The safety data sheet must explicitly state the UN number and packing group for any hazardous chemicals used in the tanning or dyeing process. Generic sheets that omit these details cause immediate holds at destination ports. You must also confirm that the sheet lists the exact CAS identity for each active ingredient, as customs officers check these against local prohibited substance lists. Mismatches here lead to rejection or costly re-export.

Why does a quote for processed leather expire faster than standard fabric orders?

Quotes expire rapidly because tanning feedstock prices fluctuate with global chemical markets. Additionally, processed leather often contains hazardous materials that require dangerous-goods declaration. Booking space for hazardous cargo is limited and highly volatile. Sellers cannot hold container rates or chemical costs for long periods without risking significant margin erosion or inability to secure vessel space.

How does packing in an ISO tank versus a drum change the freight cost?

Packing format dictates the freight method and vessel eligibility. ISO tanks allow for bulk liquid chemical transport but require specific vessel compatibility and handling facilities at both ports. Drums are more versatile but increase volumetric weight and handling complexity. Hazard class restrictions mean that certain vessels refuse drummed hazardous goods, forcing you to use more expensive specialized carriers.

What grade designation separates split leather from full grain in a listing?

The grade designation specifies whether the leather retains the original grain layer or has been sanded and refinished. Full grain leather keeps the natural pore structure and is graded by scar count and uniformity. Split leather comes from the lower layers of the hide and lacks the natural grain, requiring coating or embossing. Listings must clearly state this distinction because it determines durability and aesthetic suitability for high-end applications.

Which impurity profile details are critical for leather destined for pharmaceutical packaging?

Pharmaceutical packaging requires leather with an exceptionally low impurity profile to prevent chemical migration into sensitive products. The listing must detail heavy metal limits, specifically chrome and other tanning agents, beyond standard industrial requirements. Buyers need the specific assay data showing compliance with pharmacopoeia standards. Generic impurity statements are insufficient for this regulated sector.

How does the UN number on the declaration affect vessel acceptance for processed leather?

The UN number classifies the hazardous nature of the chemicals used in processing. Some vessels have strict limitations on carrying specific UN classes due to safety regulations. If the UN number on the dangerous-goods declaration does not match the vessel's certified hazardous cargo capacity, the shipment will be refused at the port of loading. Always verify vessel acceptance criteria before confirming the booking.
