Question 1

How does GSM affect the durability of a woven straw bag versus a nylon tote?

Accepted Answer

GSM measures the mass per square metre of the textile or woven material. For a nylon tote, a higher GSM usually indicates a denser weave that resists tearing. For a woven straw or rattan bag, GSM is less relevant than the thickness of the individual strands and the tightness of the weave. Buyers should ask for the strand diameter or weave density for natural fibre bags to ensure they can hold weight without breaking. This physical characteristic determines whether the bag will fray after a single season.

Question 2

What fibre-content details must appear on the care label for export?

Accepted Answer

The care label must state the exact percentage of each fibre used in the shell, lining, and straps. Buyers need to verify that the label matches the tech pack, especially for blended materials. Incorrect fibre content can lead to customs rejections in markets with strict textile regulations. The label must also include care instructions that match the material, such as hand wash for delicate woven items or dry clean for coated fabrics. Mislabelling is a common cause of delays at destination ports.

Question 3

Why do quotes for woven water hyacinth items expire faster than standard textiles?

Accepted Answer

Woven water hyacinth is a natural material harvested in cycles, so availability fluctuates with the season. A quote is only valid while the specific batch of dried fibres is reserved. Once the harvest window closes or the raw material is booked by another buyer, the price increases or the item becomes unavailable. Buyers should confirm raw material stock before paying a deposit, as spot prices for natural fibres do not follow standard industrial pricing models.

Question 4

How does packing flat versus hanging change the container load for these bags?

Accepted Answer

Packing bags flat allows for higher density in the container, reducing the volumetric weight per unit. Structured items like suitcases or rigid briefcases often require hanging or bulky boxes, which increases shipping costs significantly. Buyers can reduce landed cost by requesting flat-pack designs or collapsible handles. The difference in carton cube can double the freight cost per unit for structured goods compared to soft-sided alternatives.

Question 5

What azo-dye restrictions apply to dyed textile bags in strict markets?

Accepted Answer

Many destination markets ban specific azo dyes that release harmful amines when broken down. Buyers must request a test report from an accredited lab for any dyed textiles, including straps and linings. The report must show compliance with the specific limit values of the destination country, such as REACH in Europe or CPSIA in the US. Sellers often overlook lining materials, which must be tested separately if they are dyed. Failure to provide this proof will result in the shipment being held at customs.

Question 6

How do sample rounds impact the final unit cost of a bulk order?

Accepted Answer

Each sample round involves shipping prototypes, which adds freight costs to the overall project. Approval rounds also delay production, potentially pushing the order into a higher raw material price bracket. Buyers should minimize sample iterations by providing detailed tech packs with exact stitch types and material specifications. The cost of multiple sample shipments is often amortized into the final bulk price, so fewer rounds result in a lower landed cost per unit.

Question 7

What distinguishes a rattan coir bag from a standard woven rattan handbag?

Accepted Answer

Rattan coir refers to the fibrous husk of the coconut, often woven or bonded with other materials, whereas standard rattan uses the solid stem of the palm. Coir bags have a distinct texture and weight profile, often feeling heavier and rougher than smooth rattan. Buyers should check the material composition to ensure they are getting the specific fibre they need for their brand identity. The construction method for coir is different, often involving stitching or gluing rather than traditional weaving techniques.
