How does the tanning agent change the safety data sheet?

Chrome-tanned leather requires a safety data sheet that explicitly lists hexavalent chromium limits and residual sulfides. Vegetable-tanned hides need declarations focused on tannin content and natural extract residues. The destination customs authority checks these specific chemical markers to determine if the shipment is classified as hazardous waste or standard industrial material. A generic chemical list will not satisfy entry requirements for treated leather.

What residue limits does the assay specify for chrome leather?

The assay records the exact milligrams per kilogram of chromium VI remaining in the finished hide. Buyers must verify that this number falls below the threshold set by the destination's chemical regulations. Exceeding this limit classifies the leather as non-compliant regardless of its physical quality. The grade designation in the listing should reference the specific test standard used to measure this residual content.

Why does chrome tanning restrict vessel booking space?

Vessels restrict bookings for chrome-tanned leather because residual chemicals can react with other cargo or require special stowage. The hazard class assigned to the treated hide dictates which holds are available. Sellers must declare the specific packing group for the chemical residues present. This constraint often delays shipment more than the availability of the raw hides themselves.

How does bale density impact freight for United Kingdom leather?

Baled leather has lower density than drummed chemicals, increasing the volumetric weight charged by carriers. Buyers must calculate freight based on cubic meters rather than tonnage for baled shipments. The compaction level of the bale affects how many units fit in a container. Sellers who compress hides tightly reduce the overall freight cost per unit significantly.

What happens if the safety data sheet misses chromium details?

Customs will hold the shipment until the seller provides a compliant document listing all chromium compounds. This delay incurs storage fees at the destination port and may result in fines for incomplete hazardous material declaration. Buyers should request a draft safety data sheet before confirming the order to avoid these administrative bottles. The document must match the exact tanning agents used in the United Kingdom facility.

How do impurities in vegetable tanning affect grade designation?

Vegetable-tanned leather grades depend on the purity of the tannin extracts and the absence of wood residues. Assays measure the organic impurities that can cause discoloration or weak grain structure. A higher grade indicates cleaner extracts and more uniform penetration into the hide. Buyers seeking premium upholstery must verify the impurity profile in the assay report.

Why do two quotes for chrome leather resist direct comparison?

Quotes differ based on the chrome content percentage and the specific packing method required for chemical safety. One seller may quote for loose bales while another includes sealed drum packaging for hazardous residues. The base hide quality and the tanning duration also vary between suppliers. Buyers must compare the total landed cost including compliance packaging rather than just the per-kilogram price.
