What does the assay or active content percentage tell me about Raw & Processed Leather quality?

The assay or active content percentage defines the concentration of active tanning agents or finishing chemicals within the hide. This figure directly indicates the impurity profile remaining in the material after processing. A higher percentage often correlates with a more controlled chemical profile, which is critical for products entering markets with strict pharma or food-grade regulations. Buyers should compare this specific value against their own processing capabilities to ensure compatibility.

Why is the UN number critical when importing leather from Turkey?

The UN number identifies the specific hazardous substance classification of the chemicals used in the tanning and finishing process. This code determines the packing group, which dictates the safety requirements for storage and transport. Carriers use this number to verify that the vessel has the necessary containment and firefighting capabilities for that specific hazard class. Missing or incorrect UN numbers will cause immediate rejection at the port of loading.

How does feedstock price movement affect a leather quote?

The price of raw hides, which serves as the primary feedstock, fluctuates based on livestock supply and regional slaughter volumes. These daily shifts mean that a quote provided earlier in the day may no longer reflect the current market value by the time it is accepted. Buyers should request a validity period for the quote and understand that the final price is tied to the feedstock rate on the day of confirmation.

What role does the packing group play in shipping leather?

The packing group indicates the degree of danger posed by the hazardous materials associated with the processed leather. This classification determines the type of packaging, such as drums or IBCs, that is legally permitted for transport. It also influences the freight cost, as stricter packing groups require more robust containment solutions and may limit the number of vessels willing to carry the cargo.

Why do dangerous-goods booking spaces constrain leather exports?

Vessels have limited space for hazardous cargo due to safety regulations and segregation requirements. When demand for dangerous-goods slots exceeds capacity, carriers prioritize higher-value or more urgent shipments. This scarcity can delay departure dates and increase freight costs, making it difficult to secure space for standard leather exports unless the booking is made well in advance of the desired shipment date.

How do drum, IBC, or ISO tank options change the landed cost?

The choice of container directly impacts the volumetric weight and the handling fees applied by carriers. Drums are generally cheaper per unit but require more palletizing and space, while ISO tanks offer higher capacity but come with premium rental and cleaning fees. Buyers must calculate the total volumetric cost of the chosen packing method to understand the true landed cost, as freight charges are often based on the occupied space rather than just the weight.

What information do sellers typically omit from leather listings?

Sellers often leave out the specific impurity profile and the exact assay results for the chemical treatment used on the hide. They may also omit the current UN number or packing group if the product does not appear visibly hazardous. Buyers should always request the full safety data sheet and a recent assay report to verify that the chemical residues meet their destination's regulatory standards before placing an order.
