Question 1

How does the impurity profile of Calcium Carbonate affect its use in pharmaceuticals?

Accepted Answer

Pharma grade Calcium Carbonate requires a strict impurity profile that limits heavy metals and abrasive contaminants far beyond what technical grade allows. A technical grade listing may appear identical in name but contains impurities that are unacceptable for drug formulation or medical device manufacturing. Buyers must request the full impurity breakdown to ensure the material meets pharmacopeial standards, as general industrial specifications do not guarantee purity for health applications.

Question 2

What specific document proves the UN number matches the packing group for this shipment?

Accepted Answer

The dangerous-goods declaration must explicitly state the UN number and the corresponding packing group assigned by the chemical manufacturer. This document is the primary proof that the classification matches the physical properties of the substance, such as flammability or corrosivity. Without this alignment, terminal operators will reject the cargo because the handling requirements for the packing group dictate the stowage location and fire suppression methods on board.

Question 3

Why does the assay percentage matter more than the net weight for Sodium Triphosphate?

Accepted Answer

The assay percentage defines the active content of Sodium Triphosphate, which determines its cleaning efficacy and chemical reactivity in your process. Two shipments with identical net weights can have vastly different performance levels if their assay percentages differ, leading to dosage errors or ineffective results. Buyers should base their purchase decisions on the cost per unit of active ingredient rather than the total weight shipped.

Question 4

How does REACH registration impact the timeline for Chemicals & Allied Products entering the EU?

Accepted Answer

REACH registration is a prerequisite for import into the European Union, and the absence of this registration for a specific substance can halt clearance for weeks. Sellers must provide proof that their chemical is registered under the relevant ECHA regulations, or the buyer must arrange for registration at their own cost. This administrative step often adds significant lead time compared to non-regulated industrial goods, affecting production schedules.

Question 5

What happens if the Lithopone listing omits the crystal form specification?

Accepted Answer

Lithopone exists in different crystal forms, such as beta or alpha, which have distinct optical properties and dispersion characteristics. A listing that omits the crystal form specification leaves the buyer unsure if the pigment will provide the desired opacity or brightness in their coating. Buyers must specify the required crystal structure in their enquiry to ensure the seller provides material suitable for their specific application, avoiding mismatched performance.

Question 6

Can a single ISO tank handle multiple hazardous chemicals from Turkey in one trip?

Accepted Answer

ISO tanks are dedicated to a single chemical or compatible group to prevent cross-contamination and safety hazards. A tank used for one hazardous substance cannot simply be flushed and reused for another without rigorous cleaning and certification, which is rarely feasible for a single trip. Buyers must plan for dedicated tank usage per shipment, as mixed loads are prohibited for most dangerous goods, increasing the overall logistics cost.

Question 7

Why does the packing group of a chemical dictate the vessel stowage location?

Accepted Answer

The packing group indicates the degree of danger posed by the chemical, which determines the required separation distances from crew quarters and other cargo. Vessels have strict stowage rules that place higher packing group items in specific holds with enhanced fire suppression and ventilation. If the packing group is misdeclared, the vessel may refuse the cargo or impose heavy fines for violating international maritime safety regulations.
