Question 1

How do I calculate the true net weight for Value Added Shrimp Items to avoid overpaying for ice?

Accepted Answer

You calculate the true net weight by subtracting the glaze percentage from the gross weight stated in the listing. The price is often quoted per kilogram of gross weight, which includes the protective ice coating. If the glaze percentage is not explicitly stated, you must ask the seller for this figure. Without it, you cannot accurately compare the cost per kilogram of edible shrimp against other listings. The count per kilogram helps you estimate the piece size, but only the glaze data reveals the actual meat content you will receive upon thawing.

Question 2

What specific catch documentation is required for wild caught Giant Squid imports?

Accepted Answer

Wild caught Giant Squid requires catch documentation that traces the specific vessel and fishing method used. This document proves the catch was legal and helps your destination authority verify the origin. The competent-authority establishment number on the health certificate must match the processing facility that handled the squid. Without this chain of custody, your shipment may be held at the border. The health certificate alone is insufficient if the catch documentation is missing or inconsistent with the shipping details.

Question 3

Why does the freezing method matter for Soft Shell Crab quality upon arrival?

Accepted Answer

The freezing method determines the texture and moisture retention of the Soft Shell Crab. Blast freezing is often preferred for whole items to preserve the delicate shell structure. Slow freezing can cause large ice crystals that damage the tissue, leading to mushiness upon thawing. The catch or production date also plays a role, as freshness at the time of freezing is critical. You must verify the freezing method in the listing details to ensure the product meets your texture standards.

Question 4

How does reefer plug availability at the destination affect the landed cost of Milk Fish?

Accepted Answer

Reefer plug availability determines if your container can be plugged in immediately upon arrival at the destination port. If plugs are scarce, you may incur demurrage charges or need to transfer goods to a cold store. This extra handling and storage cost increases the landed cost significantly. The specific temperature setting for Milk Fish must be maintained without interruption. Delays in plugging risk temperature abuse, which can lead to product rejection and total loss of the shipment value.

Question 5

What is the difference between Fresh Eel and Frozen Eel in terms of shelf life and handling?

Accepted Answer

Fresh Eel has a very short shelf life and requires immediate processing or consumption upon arrival. It does not undergo freezing, so the cold-chain temperature records must show consistent low temperatures from harvest. Frozen Eel can be stored for extended periods and is often glazed for protection. The freezing method impacts the texture, and the glaze percentage affects the net weight. You must choose based on your processing capacity and inventory turnover rates, as fresh eel demands a much faster supply chain.

Question 6

How do seasonal quota openings impact the pricing and availability of Giant Squid?

Accepted Answer

Seasonal quota openings change the supply availability of Giant Squid instantly. When quotas open, the volume increases, which can drive prices down temporarily. However, if demand is high, prices may remain stable despite the increased supply. The quote validity window is often tied to these quota periods. You should check the current quota status before requesting a quote. A stale quote may not reflect the new supply conditions, leading to inaccurate landed cost projections for your budget planning.

Question 7

What role does the competent-authority establishment number play in the health certificate for Seafood Supplies?

Accepted Answer

The competent-authority establishment number links the health certificate to the specific processing facility that handled the product. This number proves that the facility meets the sanitary standards required by your destination country. If the number is missing or incorrect, your shipment will be rejected at the border. The health certificate must also include the catch documentation and cold-chain temperature records. All these documents must align with the establishment number to ensure smooth clearance.
