What is the difference between ONP and OINP in waste paper scrap listings?

ONP stands for Old Newsprint, which consists mainly of high-quality newsprint with minimal contamination. OINP stands for Other Industrial Papers, which includes mixed office waste and corrugated materials with higher allowable impurity levels. The distinction matters because ONP commands a higher price due to its cleaner fiber content. Buyers must check the specific grade definition in the listing to ensure the contaminant limits meet their recycling or processing standards. Confusing these two grades leads to pricing errors and potential rejection at the recycling facility.

How does basis weight affect the choice between Typek Copy Paper and Cartridge Paper?

Basis weight measures the mass of the paper per unit area, typically in grams per square meter. Typek Copy Paper usually targets a standard basis weight optimized for high-speed office printing. Cartridge Paper often has a higher basis weight and greater stiffness to withstand the mechanical stress of printing presses. Buyers should compare the exact GSM values in the listing to ensure the paper thickness matches their equipment. Using a lighter stock in a heavy-duty press can cause jams, while a heavier stock may waste material in light-duty applications.

What packaging details must a seller provide to calculate volumetric freight accurately?

The seller must state the pallet dimensions, the number of cartons per pallet, and the total height of the stacked pallet. Paper is light, so freight charges are based on the space the cargo occupies rather than its actual weight. Without precise carton dimensions and pack configuration, buyers cannot determine if the container will be filled by weight or volume. This information is critical for comparing quotes from different suppliers, as a tighter pack reduces the cost per unit significantly.

When does a retail seasonal peak cause a quote for paper products to expire?

Quotes expire quickly when major retail holidays drive a surge in demand for printed materials and packaging. This seasonal spike increases the competition for container space, causing ocean freight rates to rise independently of the factory price. A quote that was valid during a quiet period may become uncompetitive within days if shipping availability tightens. Buyers should assume that the freight component of a quote is only valid for a short window during peak seasons.

Why is moisture content a critical specification for paper stored in humid climates?

Paper is hygroscopic and absorbs moisture from the air, which can cause swelling, curling, or ink bleeding. Sellers in South Africa must specify the moisture content at the time of packing to ensure stability during transit. Buyers in humid destinations must plan for climate-controlled storage to prevent the paper from degrading before use. A listing that omits moisture specifications poses a risk of product damage upon arrival.

What material safety information is required if the paper product is for food contact?

Destination markets often require a declaration that the paper does not contain banned substances like heavy metals or certain optical brighteners. The seller must provide documentation confirming that the raw materials and inks are safe for indirect or direct food contact. This declaration is separate from general quality grades and is mandatory for clearance in many jurisdictions. Buyers should request this specific safety statement before finalizing the order to avoid customs holds.

How do finish specifications like coated versus uncoated affect the suitability of copy paper?

Coated paper has a surface layer that provides a smoother finish and better ink holdout for sharp images. Uncoated paper is more absorbent and is preferred for writing or high-speed printing where dust is a concern. The listing should clearly state the finish type, as this determines the paper's performance in specific printing applications. Buyers must match the finish specification to their end-use requirements to avoid poor print quality or excessive toner consumption.
