How does stem length affect the grading count per bunch?

Buyers define grade by counting how many stems fit into a standard unit, such as a dozen or a bundle. Longer stems reduce the count per bunch because each stem occupies more space and carries higher value. A listing that promises fifty stems might only deliver thirty if the average length exceeds the agreed limit.

What bloom stage at cut should I expect for Fresh Orchid?

Fresh Orchid shipments typically arrive with buds closed or just beginning to show color. This stage ensures the flowers last long enough for retail display. A listing claiming fully open blooms on arrival is likely misrepresenting the logistics timeline or the handling conditions during transit.

Does the phytosanitary certificate cover the entire consignment?

The phytosanitary certificate must match the specific variety and quantity listed in the commercial invoice. It proves the plants are free from quarantine pests like thrips or mites that destination countries strictly monitor. If the certificate lists a different variety than the shipping manifest, customs will hold the shipment for inspection.

What happens if the booking is delayed after quoting?

The quote expires immediately because the seller cannot hold inventory that loses quality daily. Fresh flowers require a pre-booked flight slot to ensure they arrive within their vase life window. A delay forces the seller to sell the stock locally or dispose of it, making the original price irrelevant.

Why is air freight the only option for Fresh Cut Flowers?

Sea freight takes too long for perishable blooms, causing them to rot before arrival. Air freight reduces transit time to hours rather than weeks, preserving the structural integrity of the stems. This speed comes at a high cost, which is why freight dominates the final landed price.

How does variety selection impact the unbroken cold chain?

Different varieties have varying sensitivities to ethylene gas and temperature fluctuations. A buyer must confirm that the packhouse uses specific cold chain protocols for the chosen variety. Failure to match the cold storage requirements to the variety results in premature wilting regardless of the shipping speed.

What pest interception risk is highest for South Africa exports?

Thrips and aphids are the most common pests intercepted by destination authorities. The phytosanitary certificate must explicitly state that the consignment has been inspected for these specific insects. Buyers should ask for the inspection report details to verify that the seller is proactive about pest management before shipping.
