Question 1

How does the assay percentage in a PVC scrap listing affect processing yield?

Accepted Answer

The assay percentage indicates the actual content of the polymer relative to contaminants. A higher active content reduces the waste volume during melting or extrusion. Buyers must compare this figure against their machine specifications to determine if the material is economical to process. Impurities such as metals or non-volatile residues can damage equipment or lower the quality of the final product.

Question 2

Why must the UN number match the packing group exactly in dangerous goods declarations?

Accepted Answer

The UN number identifies the specific hazardous substance, while the packing group indicates the degree of danger. Mismatches between these two identifiers cause customs authorities to reject the documentation. This error leads to shipment delays, storage fees, and potential fines. Carriers also verify this alignment before accepting the cargo for loading onto vessels.

Question 3

What role does the CAS identity play in verifying chemical safety for pharma grade rubber?

Accepted Answer

The CAS registry number provides a unique identifier for the chemical substance, ensuring precise identification across all documentation. For pharma grade materials, this number confirms that the substance matches the exact molecular structure required by regulatory bodies. Discrepancies in CAS numbers can lead to immediate rejection of the batch during quality audits. Buyers must verify this number against their local pharmacopeia standards.

Question 4

How does the choice between drums and ISO tanks affect freight costs for chemical rubber items?

Accepted Answer

Drums require more handling operations and occupy more volume relative to their payload compared to bulk containers. ISO tanks allow for direct loading and unloading, reducing port time and handling fees. The hazard class of the material may restrict the use of certain container types. Buyers should calculate the total logistics cost based on the container type rather than just the unit price.

Question 5

Why do quotes for PVC film scrap expire faster than those for solid rubber granules?

Accepted Answer

PVC film scrap is highly sensitive to feedstock price fluctuations and requires specialized dangerous goods handling. The combination of volatile raw material costs and limited vessel space for hazardous plastics causes rapid quote expiration. Solid rubber granules often have more stable pricing and broader vessel acceptance. Buyers should secure bookings quickly when dealing with film scrap variants.

Question 6

What specific detail in the safety data sheet format differs between Singapore and the destination?

Accepted Answer

Singapore follows global harmonized system standards, but the destination country may require specific hazard statements or exposure limits. The safety data sheet must be translated and adapted to meet local regulatory language requirements. Certain ingredients may be classified differently under local laws, affecting the overall hazard classification. Buyers must ensure the provided SDS matches the exact format requested by their customs broker.

Question 7

How does the impurity profile in a PVC scrap listing impact final product quality?

Accepted Answer

The impurity profile details the presence of contaminants such as metals, inks, or other polymers. High levels of contaminants can cause defects in the extruded or molded final product. Buyers must review the impurity limits to determine if additional cleaning or sorting is required. This assessment is critical for maintaining the structural integrity and appearance of the finished goods.
