Question 1

How do I distinguish between a listing for Ores and Minerals and one for Metal & Metal Products?

Accepted Answer

Check the physical form and inspection requirements. Ores and Minerals are bulk commodities traded by tonnage with prices tied to chemical assay percentages and moisture content. Metal & Metal Products are fabricated items traded by weight or unit, requiring mill certificates, temper specifications, or dimensional tolerances. If the listing mentions chemical composition and bulk vessel loading, it is an ore. If it mentions alloy grades or physical dimensions, it is a metal product.

Question 2

What happens if I source a bulk ore listing from the Metal & Metal Products branch?

Accepted Answer

You will encounter listings for fabricated steel or aluminum that require completely different logistics and documentation. Ores move in bulk carriers and require independent surveyor inspections at the loading port for assay verification. Metal products move in containers or break-bulk and require mill certificates confirming the temper and chemical composition. Sourcing an ore under the metal branch will result in quotes for processed goods that do not match your intended intake method or chemical requirements.

Question 3

What is specific about export documentation when buying from Russian Federation?

Accepted Answer

Exports from Russian Federation require specific customs declarations and often involve rail or road transport to the port of loading. Buyers must verify if the seller includes inland transport to the terminal in their quote. The documentation chain typically includes the commercial invoice, packing list, and certificate of origin. For ores, independent inspection reports from recognized surveyors are standard before the vessel departs.

Question 4

Why do listings for Pet Flakes and stock waste paper seem misplaced here?

Accepted Answer

These items belong to recycled materials or plastics, not the Minerals & metals category. Sellers sometimes file recycled plastics or waste paper under broad industrial categories to gain visibility. Buyers should ignore these listings as they require different inspection standards, such as contamination levels for plastics, rather than the assay or temper specifications relevant to ores and metals. Filing them here is a categorization error by the seller.

Question 5

What technical detail must be defined for Ores and Minerals before quoting?

Accepted Answer

The critical chemical assay percentages for the target metal or mineral content, along with the maximum allowable moisture content and impurities. Pricing for ores is typically linked to international benchmark indices adjusted for these assay levels. Without defining the exact chemical composition and moisture limits, any quote provided will be speculative and likely invalid for your processing needs. Inspections at the loading port will verify these specific parameters.

Question 6

What specification is critical for Metal & Metal Products from Russian Federation?

Accepted Answer

The temper, alloy grade, and surface finish requirements specific to the fabricated item. Unlike ores, metal products are traded based on physical properties and dimensional tolerances. Buyers must specify the exact alloy composition and any required mill certificates to confirm the material meets their manufacturing standards. Quotes for metal products vary significantly based on these physical specifications and the surface treatment applied.

Question 7

What is the costliest error when comparing quotes for this category?

Accepted Answer

Comparing a quote for bulk ore, which is priced per tonne adjusted for assay, with a quote for fabricated metal, which is priced by weight or unit. These are fundamentally different valuation methods. An ore quote includes chemical assay adjustments, while a metal quote includes processing costs for temper and finish. Mixing these two types leads to inaccurate landed cost calculations and potential rejection of goods at the destination port.
