Question 1

How does ash or silica content in copper ore change the payable weight at discharge?

Accepted Answer

Ash or silica content represents non-metallic impurities that dilute the valuable metal concentration. When the cargo arrives, the receiver measures the total weight and subtracts the mass of these inert materials. A higher silica percentage reduces the final payable weight for the copper content, even if the gross tonnage remains the same. Buyers should compare the assay results against the declared impurity levels to calculate the true net value of the shipment.

Question 2

What radiation screening data do buyers need for mica shipments from Peru?

Accepted Answer

Mica is a naturally occurring mineral that can sometimes contain trace radioactive elements. Importers typically require a gamma radiation survey report issued by an independent inspector before the cargo is loaded in Peru. This data proves the mica meets the safety thresholds of the destination country. Without this specific screening record, customs authorities may detain the container for further testing, causing significant delays and demurrage costs.

Question 3

Why does the mineral export licence determine the loading timeline in Peru?

Accepted Answer

The mineral export licence is an administrative requirement that must be issued by the relevant Peruvian authority before cargo can be declared for export. If the seller has not secured this licence in advance, the port authorities will not allow the goods to be loaded onto the vessel. This creates a hard stop in the supply chain that cannot be bypassed by expedited shipping methods. Buyers should confirm the licence status before signing the contract.

Question 4

How does particle size distribution affect handling costs for iron ore lump?

Accepted Answer

Particle size distribution determines whether the material flows freely or requires specialized handling equipment. Fine particles can cause bridging or rat-holing in hoppers, while large lumps may require crushing or specific grab buckets. The handling method chosen by the terminal operator directly impacts the demurrage and discharge fees. Buyers should verify the size range specified in the listing to ensure their receiving facilities can process the material efficiently.

Question 5

What is the difference between a mill test certificate and an assay report for chrome ore?

Accepted Answer

A mill test certificate confirms the physical processing and basic chemical composition at the source facility. An assay report, often conducted by an independent third party, provides the precise metal content and impurity levels that determine the final price. The mill test certificate is a production record, while the assay report is the commercial basis for payment. Buyers rely on the assay report for valuation but use the mill test certificate to verify production consistency.

Question 6

How does moisture content in copper ore affect the stowage factor and freight cost?

Accepted Answer

High moisture content increases the weight of the cargo without adding any valuable metal. This can cause the shipment to hit the weight limit of a container or vessel before it reaches the volume limit. The stowage factor calculation must account for this excess weight to avoid overweight penalties. Additionally, excessive moisture can lead to liquefaction risks in bulk carriers, requiring special stowage arrangements that increase freight costs.

Question 7

What scrap-contamination screening is required for recycled metal ores entering strict markets?

Accepted Answer

Strict markets require proof that the mineral ore does not contain foreign metallic scrap or waste materials. This screening involves physical inspection and chemical analysis to detect non-conductive or non-magnetic impurities. The goal is to ensure the material is virgin ore and not disguised industrial waste. Sellers must provide detailed inspection reports that specifically address these contamination checks to satisfy customs and regulatory bodies.
