Question 1

How do assay results for ores differ from temper grades for metals in listings?

Accepted Answer

Assay results for ores define the percentage of valuable elements within the rock, which directly determines the material's value and processing cost. Temper grades for metals describe the heat treatment history, which dictates mechanical strength and formability. These are mutually exclusive specification systems. You cannot compare an ore listing using chemical percentages against a metal listing using hardness scales because they measure fundamentally different attributes of the material.

Question 2

What happens if I source fabricated metal shapes under the Ores and Minerals branch?

Accepted Answer

You will encounter listings for raw geological extracts that lack the dimensional tolerances and surface finishes required for fabrication. The sellers in this branch deal in bulk commodities, not precision components. Attempting to buy finished shapes here results in receiving unprocessed material that requires significant additional machining, leading to unexpected processing costs and supply chain delays.

Question 3

What export documentation does Mauritius provide for mineral shipments leaving the port?

Accepted Answer

Export documentation for minerals typically includes certificates of origin and phytosanitary certificates if the material contains organic contaminants. The port authority requires specific weight certificates and packing lists that match the bill of lading. These documents verify the physical integrity of the shipment and are necessary for customs clearance at the destination port, ensuring the declared contents match the actual cargo.

Question 4

Why do listings from Mauritius for minerals often lack detailed packing information?

Accepted Answer

Thin inventory on this page means sellers may not have fixed packaging protocols for every potential buyer. Bulk ores are often shipped in open hatches or standard containers without specialized lining. The listing may omit packing details because the seller assumes the buyer will specify container requirements. You must explicitly ask about container lining and moisture protection to avoid cargo damage during transit.

Question 5

What is the most common mistake buyers make when comparing quotes for ores?

Accepted Answer

Buyers often compare prices per tonne without accounting for the grade variability in the ore. A lower price per tonne may reflect a lower concentration of the target element, increasing processing costs. Always request the specific assay report for the lot in question. The headline price is meaningless without the chemical composition data that determines the true value of the material.

Question 6

Which field on a listing row is most critical to verify before ordering metals?

Accepted Answer

The mill certificate reference number is the most critical field to verify. This document contains the actual chemical composition and mechanical test results for the specific batch of metal. Without verifying this number against the seller's records, you are ordering based on generic specifications that may not match the physical material delivered. Always request a copy of the certificate before confirming payment.

Question 7

How does the physical state of the material affect freight costs from Mauritius?

Accepted Answer

Ores are dense and often require specialized bulk carriers or heavy-duty containerization, which impacts stowage factors and freight rates. Metals may be bundled or palletized, allowing for more efficient use of container space but requiring different handling equipment. The density and packing method directly influence the volumetric weight calculations used by freight forwarders to determine the final shipping cost.
