Question 1

How does the catch certificate from Mauritania differ from standard export docs?

Accepted Answer

Mauritania issues a specific catch certificate that validates the fishing vessel's license and the exact geographic coordinates of the haul. This document is distinct from a simple health certificate and is often required by the European Union and other major import markets to prove legality. Without this specific certificate, the skipjack or octopus cannot clear customs in regulated jurisdictions.

Question 2

What is the difference between fresh and frozen octopus in these listings?

Accepted Answer

Fresh octopus arrives chilled and has a very short shelf life, requiring immediate processing or sale. Frozen octopus is blast-frozen on board or at the port, preserving texture and extending usability for months. The price difference reflects the cold chain investment and the reduced risk of spoilage during transit.

Question 3

Why do skipjack tuna prices vary so much on this page?

Accepted Answer

Variation depends on whether the fish is whole gutted, headless, or gutted and gilled. It also depends on the internal temperature at freezing and the pack type, such as wet pack in seawater or dry pack in ice. Each processing choice affects the weight, yield, and final quality, making direct price comparisons misleading without these details.

Question 4

What happens if the lobster is listed as cooked but arrives raw?

Accepted Answer

Cooked lobster is processed immediately after capture to preserve sweetness and texture. If the seller mislabels raw product as cooked, the buyer faces a different set of handling requirements and a significantly shorter remaining shelf life. This discrepancy often leads to rejection upon arrival because the product does not meet the stated specification for storage.

Question 5

How does the mullet listing specify the freezing method?

Accepted Answer

Mullet listings often omit whether the fish is individually quick frozen or block frozen. Block frozen mullet is packed in large boxes with layers of ice, while individual freezing keeps each fish separate. This distinction affects how easily the buyer can portion the product and influences the risk of freezer burn during long sea voyages.

Question 6

What packing details should I verify for frozen octopus?

Accepted Answer

Verify whether the octopus is packed in polybags inside cartons or directly in cartons. The weight tolerance per box is also critical, as some sellers pack heavier than declared to maximize load. Confirming the net weight versus gross weight ensures you pay only for the product and not for excessive ice or packaging materials.

Question 7

Why is the catch zone important for skipjack tuna quality?

Accepted Answer

Skipjack from different zones in the Atlantic can vary in fat content and firmness. The water temperature and plankton availability in the specific catch zone influence the final texture and flavor profile. Buyers targeting specific markets for sashimi or canning need to know the exact zone to ensure the biological quality matches their end product.
