Question 1

When should I select Agriculture versus Food & Beverages for Sesame Seeds?

Accepted Answer

Choose Agriculture if you are buying raw, unprocessed seeds for further milling or oil extraction. Select Food & Beverages only if the listing explicitly states the seeds are cleaned, sorted, and ready for direct human consumption. The grading standards and moisture limits differ between these two branches, so mixing them up leads to incorrect quality expectations.

Question 2

What happens if I source White Pepper under the wrong branch?

Accepted Answer

Sourcing under Agriculture implies raw harvest, while Food & Beverages requires strict hygiene and cleaning standards. If you need a product ready for retail packaging, you must look for processing claims in the listing. Buying raw pepper when you need processed results in additional handling costs and potential contamination risks at your facility.

Question 3

Which branch handles Used Rails Scraps and why does it matter?

Accepted Answer

Used Rails Scraps belong in Industrial goods & chemical because they are heavy metal commodities subject to different inspection protocols than agricultural goods. Placing them in Agriculture or Miscellaneous creates confusion regarding phytosanitary requirements and customs classification. Industrial classification ensures you get quotes based on tonnage and steel grade rather than volume.

Question 4

What does a listing for Wet Salted Cow Hides actually require?

Accepted Answer

This product falls under Agriculture or Apparel and fashion accessories depending on whether it is raw hide or finished leather. You must check if the salt curing process meets your destination's veterinary standards. The listing should specify the hide grade and salt content, as excessive moisture can lead to rot during transit if not packed correctly.

Question 5

Why do listings in Miscellaneous often lack critical packing details?

Accepted Answer

The Miscellaneous branch captures a wide variety of non-standard items that do not fit neatly into other categories. Sellers often omit specific weight or dimension details, assuming buyers will ask. You must request precise packing dimensions and weight breakdowns to calculate freight costs accurately, as general descriptions rarely reflect the actual volumetric weight.

Question 6

What documentation is mandatory for Kenyan agricultural exports?

Accepted Answer

Kenyan authorities require a phytosanitary certificate for all plant-based products to certify freedom from pests. Exporters must also provide a certificate of origin to claim any preferential tariff rates. Without these documents, your shipment will likely be held at the destination port or returned, incurring significant storage and demurrage fees.

Question 7

How does the port of Mombasa affect the quote validity?

Accepted Answer

Congestion at Mombasa can delay container loading, causing freight rates to spike within days. A quote that does not account for current port throughput risks becoming invalid before you place the order. Always ask for a quote validity period that includes buffer time for potential port delays.
