Question 1

How do I know if I should look under Ores and Minerals or Metal & Metal Products for steel bars?

Accepted Answer

Reinforced steel bars and standard steel bars are fabricated goods that require specific tensile strength and dimensional tolerances, placing them firmly in Metal & Metal Products. Ores and Minerals covers raw excavated materials that have not been shaped or processed into structural components. Checking the sub-category prevents quoting on raw rock when you need finished construction materials.

Question 2

What is the main difference in packing between chain link wire mesh and raw mineral ores?

Accepted Answer

Chain link wire mesh is a fabricated metal product that typically ships in bundles or coils, often wrapped to prevent rust damage during transit. Raw mineral ores move in loose bulk quantities, usually loaded directly into ship holds or large open-top containers. The packing method dictates the handling equipment required at the destination port.

Question 3

Why does sourcing stainless steel sinks under this category create a mismatch?

Accepted Answer

Stainless steel sinks are fabricated consumer or commercial fixtures, not raw metals or ores. They belong under Metal & Metal Products or potentially under finished goods depending on the specific classification. Sourcing them as a raw material leads to quotes for steel sheets rather than finished units, making direct comparison impossible.

Question 4

What documentation is critical when importing raw ores from Jamaica versus fabricated metal products?

Accepted Answer

Raw ores often require detailed assay reports to confirm chemical composition and moisture content, which directly affects the price per tonne. Fabricated metal products like steel bars need mill test certificates to verify the temper and alloying elements. The paperwork chain differs significantly between the two branches.

Question 5

How does the physical form of cross-shaped steel differ from bar stock in terms of handling?

Accepted Answer

Cross-shaped steel items, often used in construction reinforcement, may have specific bending radii or tying points that affect how they are stacked and secured. Bar stock is linear and easier to bundle tightly. Understanding the geometry helps predict whether the cargo requires special lashing or can be handled with standard grabs.

Question 6

What happens if I source a bulk listing under Metal & Metal Products when I need raw material?

Accepted Answer

You will receive quotes for processed items with higher value-added costs, such as cutting, shaping, or finishing. Raw ores are priced based on commodity markets and content, while fabricated metals include manufacturing margins. The price difference can be substantial, and the specifications will not match your processing requirements.

Question 7

Why is a quote for chain link wire mesh often uncomparable without knowing the mesh size?

Accepted Answer

Chain link wire mesh varies significantly by aperture size, wire gauge, and coating type. A quote without these details is generic and cannot be compared to a specific technical requirement. Buyers must confirm the exact weave pattern and material thickness to ensure the product meets the intended security or containment needs.
