How does the gross calorific value on the row affect the price per ton?

The gross calorific value directly determines the energy content per ton, which is the primary driver of pricing for Thermal Coal. A higher calorific value means more heat energy is released during combustion, allowing power plants to generate more electricity from less fuel. Sellers price based on this metric, so a difference of even a small number of calories can significantly impact the total contract value.

What sulfur limit should I check before ordering Indonesian Steam Coal for a specific plant?

You must check the sulfur limit against the specific emission standards of the power plant or industrial facility that will consume the coal. High sulfur content can lead to corrosion in boilers and violate environmental regulations in the destination country, resulting in heavy fines or rejection. The listing should state the maximum sulfur percentage, and you must verify this against your plant's technical specifications to ensure compatibility.

Why is the posting date critical for verifying the availability of Coal from Indonesia?

The posting date is critical because Thermal Coal inventory is dynamic and prices change frequently with global energy markets. Outdated listings may display incorrect stock levels or stale pricing for common Indonesian thermal coal grades currently traded in the market. Buyers should assume that listings older than a few weeks may be outdated and require direct confirmation of availability and current pricing before proceeding.

Who pays for inland haulage when importing Thermal Coal from remote mines in Indonesia?

The party responsible for inland haulage depends entirely on the incoterm used in the quote, typically FOB or CIF. Under FOB terms, the seller usually covers the cost of moving the coal from the mine to the port of loading. Under CIF or other terms, the buyer may need to arrange and pay for this initial leg of transportation, which can be a significant cost given the distance from mines to ports.

How does the metric ton unit of sale affect the minimum order quantity for thermal coal?

The unit of sale, often metric tons, sets the baseline for calculating the minimum order quantity required by the seller. Sellers may require a minimum container load or a specific tonnage threshold to make the logistics of loading and shipping economically viable. Buyers must ensure their required volume meets this minimum, as ordering below it may result in higher per-unit costs or refusal of the order.

What happens if the ash content in the shipped lot exceeds the row's specification?

If the ash content exceeds the specification stated on the row, the buyer can claim a price reduction or reject the shipment. Ash is non-combustible material that reduces the effective energy content of the coal and increases disposal costs at the destination. Contracts typically include adjustment mechanisms based on actual laboratory test results, so discrepancies between the quoted grade and the delivered grade directly impact the final invoice amount.

Which certificate is mandatory for clearing Thermal Coal at the destination port?

A certificate of quality and quantity issued by an independent surveyor is typically mandatory for clearing Thermal Coal at the destination port. This document verifies that the coal matches the specifications agreed upon in the contract, including calorific value, ash, and sulfur content. Without this certificate, customs authorities and the receiving power plant may refuse to accept the shipment, leading to storage fees and potential legal disputes.
