How does the alloy designation on a listing affect usable grade?

The alloy designation specifies the exact elemental composition, such as copper content in bronze powder or carbon levels in steel scrap. This designation determines mechanical properties like tensile strength and corrosion resistance. A buyer must match this specific designation to their manufacturing requirements, as a slight variation in alloying elements can render the material unsuitable for structural applications or casting processes.

What is the role of the mill test certificate in this trade?

The mill test certificate provides the chemical assay and physical property results for the metal batch. It serves as the primary proof that the material meets the specified grade standards. Buyers rely on this document to verify that the actual composition matches the seller's declaration, ensuring the metal will perform as expected in downstream fabrication or smelting operations without unexpected failures.

Why does radiation screening matter for scrap metal imports?

Radiation screening is a mandatory entry requirement for scrap metal to ensure no radioactive sources are mixed into the load. This contamination screening protects the receiving facility and the environment from hazardous material. If a shipment fails this screening, the entire cargo may be rejected or destroyed, leading to significant financial loss and logistical delays at the destination port.

How does particle size distribution impact powder metal pricing?

Particle size distribution affects how the powder flows and compacts during manufacturing, directly influencing its utility for specific applications. Finer powders often command higher prices due to the additional processing required to achieve uniform size. Buyers must specify the required mesh size or micrometer range to ensure the powder meets their production needs, as inconsistent distribution can cause defects in the final product.

What determines whether to use break-bulk or container shipping?

The stowage factor and density of the metal products decide the shipping method. High-density items may fill a container by weight before volume is reached, making containerization cost-effective. Conversely, low-density bulk scrap or large structural components may require break-bulk vessels to accommodate their volume, significantly altering the freight cost and handling requirements for the shipment.

How does the mineral export licence affect shipment timing?

The mineral export licence is a regulatory requirement that must be obtained before cargo can legally leave the country. Delays in securing this licence can halt the entire shipping process, regardless of container availability. Buyers should confirm the seller has initiated this process early, as bureaucratic processing times can extend the lead time beyond standard shipping durations.

Why must the index date be stated in the enquiry?

Metal prices fluctuate daily based on global market indices, making a quote valid only for a short window. Stating the index date in the enquiry locks in the reference point for the price calculation. Without this specification, the seller may adjust the quote based on the current index rate, leading to unexpected cost increases if the market has moved since the initial discussion.
