Does the moisture content in Magnetite Iron Ore reduce the payable weight?

Yes, moisture reduces the net payable weight because buyers pay for dry metal content. The mill test certificate should state the as-received moisture percentage so you can calculate the dry metric tons. Sellers often quote based on dry weight, but delivery occurs with inherent moisture. You must agree on the deduction method before shipping to avoid disputes at discharge.

What is the difference between Iron Ore Fines and Lump regarding shipping?

Fines are crushed particles that require bagging or liner protection to prevent loss during transit. Lump material consists of larger pieces that can be loaded freely into break-bulk holds. Fines have a higher stowage factor and may attract higher freight rates due to volume constraints. Lump is denser and easier to handle but may have different grade specifications.

Why does the mill test certificate matter for India mineral exports?

The mill test certificate confirms the chemical assay matches the grade stated in the listing. It is a required document for the mineral export licence application in India. Without it, the shipment cannot clear customs or be accepted by the destination mill. Buyers should verify the assay values against their own specifications before signing the contract.

How does radiation screening affect Iron Ore shipments from India?

Many destinations require proof that the ore does not contain elevated radiation levels. The seller must arrange for screening and provide a certificate of non-radioactivity. This process adds time and cost but is mandatory for entry. Failure to provide this document results in the vessel being refused entry or the cargo being rejected at the port.

What happens if the ash content exceeds the agreed limit?

Excess ash content triggers penalty charges or rejection of the cargo. The penalty is calculated based on the percentage above the agreed limit. Buyers should check the ash specification in the listing and confirm the penalty formula with the seller. Disputes arise when the assay is performed at discharge rather than shipment.

Why do quotes for Iron Ore expire so quickly?

Prices are tied to volatile global indices that change daily. Sellers hold quotes open for only a few days to manage their risk. If the index moves significantly during the holding period, the seller may withdraw the offer. Buyers must act fast to lock in the price and confirm the order.

Does the stowage factor change the freight cost for Iron Ore?

Yes, the stowage factor determines how much space the cargo occupies per ton. Dense lump ore may be charged by weight, while lighter fines may be charged by volume. This affects whether you pay for weight or volume capacity on the vessel. Understanding this helps you calculate the true landed cost accurately.
