Question 1

How does the tannage method change the assay requirements for Raw & Processed Leather?

Accepted Answer

Vegetable tanning and chrome tanning create entirely different chemical profiles that alter the assay and active content percentage required by buyers. A listing for Raw & Processed Leather must specify the CAS identity of the tanning agents used, as this determines if the hide meets technical or food-grade standards. Buyers in strict markets often reject chrome-tanned goods without specific impurity profiles, regardless of the visual quality of the leather. Always check the chemical specification before assuming tannage type based on color or texture.

Question 2

What happens if the UN number for the leather chemical residue is incorrect?

Accepted Answer

An incorrect UN number for the chemical residue in Raw & Processed Leather prevents the dangerous-goods declaration from being filed correctly. The destination port will hold the shipment until the safety data sheet matches the actual packing group and hazard class. This error causes delays because the receiving authority cannot verify the chemical safety of the imported hide. Verify the UN number against the specific tanning chemicals used in India before the container leaves the yard.

Question 3

Why do quotes for Raw & Processed Leather expire faster than other industrial goods?

Accepted Answer

Quotes for Raw & Processed Leather expire quickly because feedstock prices fluctuate daily and dangerous-goods booking space is limited. Vessels that accept the specific hazard class of tanned leather have fewer sailings than standard cargo ships. A delay in securing a dangerous-goods slot can invalidate a price that was based on current feedstock rates. Confirm the vessel availability before relying on a quoted price for India leather exports.

Question 4

How does drum versus IBC packaging affect the landed cost of processed leather?

Accepted Answer

Using drums for Raw & Processed Leather increases the volumetric weight compared to IBC or ISO tank options, raising freight charges. The choice of packaging also influences the hazard class classification, which determines which vessels will accept the booking. Drums require more handling and stowage space, adding terminal fees at both the origin and destination ports. Calculate the total landed cost by including the packaging method and the resulting freight constraints for India shipments.

Question 5

What specific chemical declaration must accompany a shipment of tanned leather?

Accepted Answer

A shipment of Raw & Processed Leather must include a safety data sheet that lists the exact impurity profile and CAS identity of the tanning agents. This document is required for the dangerous-goods declaration and must align with the UN number and packing group. Generic chemical safety forms are rejected by destination authorities who need the specific active content percentage for compliance. Ensure the safety data sheet is formatted for the destination market before loading the container.

Question 6

Why is the impurity profile critical when comparing two listings for the same leather?

Accepted Answer

Two listings for Raw & Processed Leather with identical names may have vastly different impurity profiles that affect downstream processing. The assay or active content percentage reveals the level of residual chemicals that must be managed during further manufacturing. Buyers in strict markets require specific limits on heavy metals or other residues found in the impurity profile. Compare the chemical specifications, not just the physical appearance, when sourcing leather from India.

Question 7

How does the hazard class of the tanned leather limit vessel options?

Accepted Answer

The hazard class of Raw & Processed Leather determines which vessels are licensed to carry the dangerous-goods declaration. Many standard cargo vessels refuse bookings for leather with specific chemical residues, limiting the available shipping routes from India. This constraint can delay shipments if no suitable vessel is available for the required packing group. Check the hazard class and vessel acceptance criteria before finalizing the logistics plan for processed leather.
