How does the count per kilogram change the price comparison for frozen prawns?

The count per kilogram defines the size grade of the shrimp. A lower count number means larger shrimp, which command a higher price per unit. When comparing listings, you must normalize the price to a consistent count. A listing with a smaller count but a higher total price might actually be cheaper per kilogram of edible meat. Always calculate the cost based on the actual meat yield after accounting for glaze.

What happens if the competent-authority establishment number is missing from the packaging?

The competent-authority establishment number is the primary proof that the processing facility meets destination safety standards. Without this number, customs authorities in most strict markets will reject the entire shipment. The health certificate cannot be issued or validated without linking it to that specific facility code. Buyers should request a copy of the label before confirming payment to ensure the number is legible and valid.

Why does catch or production date matter for frozen tilapia?

The catch or production date indicates the age of the product when it was frozen. Older lots may have suffered quality degradation during long-term storage, even if frozen. Buyers often specify a maximum age for the product to ensure texture and flavor integrity. A listing that omits this date is hiding critical quality information that affects shelf life at your end.

How does glaze percentage affect the net weight you pay for?

Glaze is the layer of ice applied to protect the seafood during freezing. It adds weight that you pay for but cannot consume. A higher glaze percentage means you are paying more for ice and less for actual squid or cuttlefish. Always check the net weight versus the gross weight in the listing details to determine the true cost of the edible portion.

What is the risk of ignoring reefer plug availability at the destination?

Reefer plug availability determines whether your container can be plugged in immediately upon arrival. If plugs are full or unavailable, the container must be moved to a dry storage area. This incurs demurrage charges and risks temperature abuse if the generator is not running. Confirming plug availability with your freight forwarder before the vessel arrives prevents unexpected storage fees and quality loss.

How does the freezing method impact the texture of frozen shellfish?

The freezing method, such as quick freezing versus slow freezing, affects ice crystal formation. Quick freezing creates smaller crystals that cause less damage to the cell structure of the meat. This results in better texture and less drip loss upon thawing. Listings should specify the freezing method, as slow-frozen products may appear mushy or lose their firmness after defrosting.

Why must catch documentation be verified for squid and cuttlefish exports?

Catch documentation verifies the legality of the harvest and prevents illegal fishing products from entering the supply chain. Many destinations require specific catch logs or fishing permit numbers to clear customs. Without this documentation, the shipment may be seized or destroyed. Buyers must ensure the seller provides complete catch records that match the species and quantity declared on the commercial invoice.
