Question 1

How does the movement specification separate a basic quartz watch from a higher-grade mechanical model?

Accepted Answer

The movement is the core differentiator. A quartz movement relies on a battery and crystal oscillator for timekeeping, offering accuracy and low maintenance. A mechanical movement uses a mainspring and gears, requiring winding or kinetic energy. Buyers should check the movement manufacturer and power reserve for mechanical models, as these specs directly impact durability and retail positioning. The listing should state the movement type clearly to avoid confusion between battery-operated and self-winding units.

Question 2

What chemical restrictions apply to the metal cases and plating on these watches?

Accepted Answer

Many destinations enforce strict limits on nickel release and heavy metals like lead or cadmium in watch cases and bracelets. Buyers must request test reports confirming compliance with standards like REACH or CPSIA, depending on the target market. These restrictions ensure that direct skin contact does not cause allergic reactions or health hazards. Without these reports, shipments can be held at customs or rejected upon arrival.

Question 3

Why do watch prices fluctuate with seasonal calendars rather than steel spot prices?

Accepted Answer

The cost of raw steel is a small fraction of the final landed cost. The primary drivers are retail seasonality, marketing campaigns, and production slot availability. Sellers allocate factory time months in advance for peak seasons like back-to-school or holidays. A quote may expire if the requested production window conflicts with these pre-booked slots, forcing the buyer to accept a higher rate for immediate or off-peak production.

Question 4

How does hanging versus flat pack affect the carton cube and freight cost?

Accepted Answer

Hanging display boxes increase the volume of each unit, raising the carton cube significantly. This reduces the number of units per container, increasing the per-unit freight cost. Flat pack designs minimize volume, allowing more units per shipment. Buyers should evaluate the retail display needs against freight savings to determine the optimal packaging strategy for their specific logistics route.

Question 5

What is the role of the tech pack in approving watch samples?

Accepted Answer

The tech pack defines the exact specifications for the case, dial, hands, strap, and movement. It serves as the blueprint for sample approval, ensuring the physical product matches the design intent. Discrepancies in dial printing, strap stitching, or case finishing are identified during this stage. Once approved, the tech pack becomes the reference for bulk production, preventing deviations that could lead to quality disputes later.

Question 6

Which labelling is mandatory for the textile straps or packaging materials?

Accepted Answer

Destination countries often require fibre content and care labelling on any textile components, including straps or fabric boxes. This information must be accurate and in the local language. Mislabelling can result in customs delays or fines. Buyers should verify that the seller includes these labels as part of the standard packing process to ensure smooth clearance at the destination port.

Question 7

How do sample approval rounds impact the final landed cost?

Accepted Answer

Multiple sample rounds can add weeks to the timeline and incur additional shipping and modification costs. Each iteration requires production time and materials, which are often billed separately. Efficient communication and a clear tech pack reduce the number of rounds needed. Buyers should budget for at least one round of modifications to account for minor adjustments in fit or finish before bulk production begins.
